Black Lightning - S1E7 - Equinox: The Book of Fate

Previously on Black Lightning, “Three Sevens: The Book of Thunder”

After last week’s overstuffed episode, Black Lightning managed to pack a lot of story and action into a perfectly paced outing.

As expected, Anissa is ready to hit the streets with Black Lightning to save their city. First, she needs to learn a few valuable lessons. Jeff takes her to task for destroying the statue on campus, and points out that giving Lynn his father’s research may have made her a target. The hardest lesson is realizing she may have been responsible for getting her grandfather’s editor killed.

A portion of “Equinox” is spent debating the merits of training Anissa to use her powers or encouraging her to forget about them. Of course, Lynn is Team Hell No… until she isn’t. Lynn is consistent with her inconsistency. After confessing that Jeff’s role as Black Lightning was the cause of their divorce and warning Anissa of the perils of the superhero life, Lynn later tells Jeff that if Anissa is going to do it (and we all know she will), he should be there to train and protect her. It’s an idea that Jeff fully supports after witnessing the death of Tobias’ sister Tori.

How’d we get there? Well, through a whole lotta backstabbing and double-dealing. Gambi finally admits he knew Tobias was alive, but swears he kept quiet out of fear for Jeff’s life. Then he pays Lady Eve a visit to ask that she get Tobias under control. For someone who’s supposed to dead, he’s been strutting around the streets and even about to open a nightclub. It’s decided that Joey Toledo needs to go and Gambi carries out the murder, leaving a marker that will make it clear to Tobias that Lady Eve is responsible.

This sets up to ambushes at once in the final act of the episode. With help from Henderson, Black Lightning prepares to take out Tobias at the club opening, which leads to Tori’s death and Tobias being wounded and forced to leave her behind. Lady Eve is also killed by assailants wielding lightning guns so that Black Lightning looks like the culprit.

The best part of the episode (and the most shocking) came in the final moments when LaLa is resurrected in a motel room. The spirit of the woman he murdered, LaWanda, is there and turns to dust which lands on his chest to form a tattoo of her face.

What? I know, right?

  2. For the podcast

This show keeps surprising us in those last few minutes. Didn’t expect Jill Scott to go out like that. Is she really dead? And wtf was that with Latavius? Was that LaWanda who did that? I’m so confused.

Now that his beloved sister is dead, Tobias is gonna be on the warpath. And did he set it up to frame Black Lightning for Lady Eve’s death? I’m guessing the Lightning guns weren’t around when the cops got there.

That’s it. Can’t wait to hear the podcast.

  3. Hey Nina, Donald, John!

So let me get this straight, Jeff is supposed to teach Anissa how to be a responsible superhero, but he aint take the time to learn CPR?

Did they just not show us Tobia’s crew deleting the security footage? Cause it’s hard to miss 50 leven niggas with lightning guns.

And I don’t have a BAM, but I know it wasn’t that parent telling his son to let somebody punk him, that must be some new wave parenting. 2 dudes coming at you and you supposed to remain calm? Both of my parents instilled the hit them before they hit you program, that scene was so foreign to me.

  4. For the podcast:
Damn, damn, damn!!! (Florida Evans voice) How y’all expect me leave feedback? They took my baby. Ain’t no sunshine when she gone, Nina. They better be glad i’m a motherfuckin professional.

All Runs Out by Alice Smith

You and Me Together Pt. 1 by Roy Roberts Experience (when they took my boo)

Black Lightning is a motherfucker because just when Flash had a good episode, BL comes back with a Mutombo finger wag. That last five minutes was everything!!! RIP Bae

  5. For the podcast:

    Hey yall.

Alfred is fucking Jefferson, Tobias and Lady Eve ALL AT THE SAME TIME. He’s a THOT and I’m here for it! I got slightly concerned when I saw him in that stalker getup - he looked like he’d just stopped creeping in the bushes, Republican stache and all!

Alfred’s superhero name must be “The Impossible White Man” because he is not one to be fucked with!!

  6. For the podcast
After lackluster past episode, this one was pretty good.

    1. Lynn/Jefferson-at first, I was all in but now they’re boring-same old thing every week -I’m ready for VP thirsty to add some spice to this mix
    2. Gambi/is he a good guy/bad guy or does he straddle both sides to main control/power?
    3. RIP Lady Eve. Gone too soon yet she went out like a G though she got incinerated.
    4. Tobias & sis aren’t invincible after all; wonder how Tobias will be affected physically & mentally by his injuries.
    5. Surprise: LaLa (forgot his govt name already😄) has been resurrected as was LaWanda! Where were they kept? Significance of the tattoo? Will all the evil dead rise?
    6. My Black ass moment: per Tobias “Jazz is one of the few things brothers got right…..”😁
    That’s all I have.
