BluTuesday - October 4, 2016

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from lamenting the fall weather leaving so abruptly to bring you the latest releases to home media for October 4, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss bad movies, flatulent corpses, a topical film, everyone’s favorite mutants, the worst overnight stay ever, proof that you can’t go home again, a couple of cult classics, and badass fighters. As you can see, we have a lot to get to, so let’s get to it.

Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens (NR)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 18%

Fin Shepard (Ian Zierling) and April Wexler (Tara Reid) have returned to fight killer sharks in tornados. The two shark fighters have retired to the countryside, but when sharks are looking for you, they’ll find you…no matter what. This film, which also stars Tommy Davidson, Corey Taylor, and David Hasselhoff, is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. Listen…you already know what you’re getting into with this movie. Either you’re going along for the ride, or you’re going to find something else to do.

Swiss Army Man (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 67%

Hank (Paul Dano) finds himself stranded on a desert island with no hope of ever returning home. However, just when he reaches his lowest point, he comes face-to-face with Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) - a walking, talking corpse. Together, they set off on a journey to get Hank home. This film, which also stars Shane Carruth, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Richard Gross, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. There have been a lot of premises for movies in this day and age, but none have been more unique than this one. It’s also a pretty heartwarming tale that’s sold by its two leads. Give it a look.

The Purge: Election Year (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 54%

In this continuation of The Purge franchise, an election year is upon us. The heated debate this year? Pro-purge and anti-purge. Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) finds himself as the Head of Security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) as she begins her hotly contested presidential run. But, when they find themselves betrayed during the Purge, they have to fight to stay alive during the one time of year where everyone wants them dead. This film, which also stars Raymond J. Barry, Mykelti Williamson, and Edwin Hodge, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. I’ve never seen any of these movies, but they seem to be wildly popular. I’m not a Frank Grillo fan, but if you like lots of violence and suspense, this is for you.

X-Men: Apocalypse (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 48%

Apocalypse (Oscar Issac) is coming, and he recruits Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Angel (Ben Hardy) to be his Four Horsemen. Their goal? Complete eradication of the human race and the beginning of a new world order. It’s up to Professor Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and the rest of the X-Men to put a stop to his evil plans. This film, which also stars Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, and Evan Peters, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. Apocalypse is one of the most feared mutants in the Marvel Comics universe. Unfortunately, you don’t get the same scale from this movie. In fact, this movie is a joyless bore, Psylocke, Jubilee, and Storm - an Omega-level mutant in the books - get the short shrift, and it completely misses the point of many of its own characters. As much as it pains me to admit it, I can’t recommend this.

American Horror Story: Hotel

Welcome to the Hotel Cortez, where The Countess (Lady Gaga) will make sure you have a “pleasant” stay. When detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley) gets wind of a string of murders at the ritzy hotel, he finds himself knee-deep in more visceral crimes than he could even imagine. This series, which also stars Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, and Sarah Paulson, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. This anthology series keeps growing in both size and popularity, and everyone involved seems to be having a wonderful time - including netting Lady Gaga a Golden Globe. Check this show out.

Also included in this week’s TV findings:

Banshee: The Complete Fourth Season

Constantine: The Complete Series

Venture Bros: The Complete Sixth Season

Vikings: Season Four

That’s all I have for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
