What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from recovering from my allergies to bring you the latest releases to home media for September 13, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss friendly fire, a rockumentary about the greatest singer you’ve never heard of, and two classic films celebrating anniversaries by coming to home media. Let’s get started, folks.
Captain America: Civil War (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 90%
When a mission in Lagos goes haywire, the Avengers are left reeling when the world’s leaders finally agree on something for a change, enacting the Sokovia Accords. Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is all for the Accords, while Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is vehemently opposed to it. This sets the stage for a battle of titans, with new players T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) - the fearsome Black Panther and Peter Parker (Tom Holland) - new superhero Spider-Man joining the fray. But, there is a new evil lurking in the background, and his name is Zemo (Daniel Brühl). This film, which also stars Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johannson, and Elizabeth Olson, is available in a three disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. This movie was my most anticipated movie of the summer, and it did not disappoint in the least. Full of intrigue, suspense, and fight scenes that need to be seen to be believed, this is a must watch.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 77%
From the minds of the comedians at The Lonely Island comes this hilarious look at Connor4Real (Andy Samberg), a popo singer who had his first career album shoot him to a new level of fame. However, after the second album tanks, he’s left wondering what went wrong and how to get back into the limelight he so richly deserves. This film, which also stars Joan Cusack, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Sarah Silverman, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. I’m not one for comedies, but I do like the style of music The Lonely Island group spoofs, and it genuinely sounds good…if not a bit nonsensical. Check it out and get a good laugh out of it.
Aliens: 30th Anniversary Edition (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 98%
The sequel to 1979’s Alien gets the anniversary treatment in this release. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is the lone survivor of humanity’s first encounter with the eponymous alien. No one believes her at first, but when an entire colony of humans disappear, they begin to wonder if they’re on the verge of being on the wrong side of history. This film, which also stars Paul Reiser, Bill Paxton, and Lance Henriksen, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version. I’ve never seen any of the Alien movies, because I don’t do horror; however, if you do, you can’t go wrong with this edition that was supervised by James Cameron himself.
The Transformers: The Movie - 30th Anniversary Edition (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 55%
You’ve got the touch! You’ve got the power…YEAH! The original movie that managed to both destroy your childhood and give new meaning to your childhood is getting the Blu-ray treatment for the first time ever. When the planet-eating planet known as Unicron (Orson Wells) targets the planet Cybertron, the Autobots have to figure out how to stop this monstrosity while taking on the Decepticons at the same time. Many sacrifices are made, including one making the ultimate sacrifice, but the answer may lie within the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. This film, which stars Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, and Leonard Nimoy, is available in a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version. I admit this isn’t a great movie; I’ll even admit it’s not a good movie. But, despite the fact that the music doesn’t stop until the movie does, it’s a fun movie that will captivate longtime fas of the series. ‘Til All Are One.
That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.
Until next time…
