Lucifer - S2E2 - Liar, Liar Slutty Dress on Fire
Previously on Lucifer, “Everything’s Coming Up Lucifer”
Having a Devil of a Time
Lucifer’s mom has not had an easy time. Since she can only inhabit the body of someone who is recently deceased, she finds herself in various bodies and ends up dying again in her confusion until she ends up in the body of Tricia Helfer. We should all be so lucky.
Lucifer, Doubting Thomas that he is, sets out to disprove her story and when he finds a second body at the place where his mom woke up, he uses Chloe to help prove him right.
Since he can’t take his mother with him, Lucifer leaves his mother with Mazikeen. Maze is excited because she was never able to break Lucifer’s mom in hell, but now that she’s stuck in a flesh sack, Maze thinks she has a better chance of getting Lucifer’s mom to submit. Maze is definitely a dominant.
Maze seems to be taking the return of Lucifer’s mother personally and Lucifer’s mom quickly picks up on the unhealthiness of Lucifer and Maze’s relationship. The show is setting up an intriguing dynamic between these two women. Outside of Lucifer, Maze has probably spent the most time with Lucifer’s mother as her jailer so her motivations in regards to Maze are also suspect.
Even the Devil Prays
Throughout the episode, Lucifer gets caught praying, which is apparently his way of calling Amenadiel. His big brother is busy though. He’s trying to figure out why his powers have gone all wonky. Unfortunately, he keeps getting interrupted by Dr. Linda, who is still pretty pissed that he pretended to be a psychiatrist last season. The two of them have a touching scene where he genuinely apologizes, but Amenadiel needs more than a sorry to save him because his angel wings are wasting away. I’m not even going to lie, I gasped out loud. He looks like a diseased bird and I mean that in the saddest way.
The case of the week takes a turn when Lucifer finds out that his mother was definitely the victim and her killer might still be pursuing her. Lucifer finds himself in the position of protector and it plays out through the end of the episode when Lucifer’s mother confesses that she sent him to Hell for his own protection. According to her, God was so angry after the angels rebelled he wanted to destroy Lucifer, but she convinced God to send Lucifer to Hell instead. Her story convinces Lucifer to let her stay with him, but the smirk Lucifer’s mother gives to the sky definitely hints at a longer con.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered. Why are Amenadiel’s wings deteriorating? What is Lucifer’s mom’s name? So far he’s just referred to her as the goddess of all creation. As we discussed in the finale recap, in Canaanite legend, Lucifer’s mom is known as Asherah or Helel aka “The Pit” which fits with Maze’s line about her not having a form when they were in Hell. Next week’s episode is titled Sin-Eater and in Aztec culture the mother goddess, Tlazolteotl, was known to cleanse the soul by eating its filth. The show has yet to give her a definitive name to the mother so it’s still up in the air. Once we have a name, we might have a clearer sense of her motivations. They’ve also set up a future story with Lucifer’s mother inhabiting the body of a woman who is already a mother. I’m sure that will come back into play later in the season.
The Devil Is Laughing
“Traumatized for eternity now, so thank you very much for that” – Lucifer, after seeing his very hot mother naked.
“She’s stupid hot, wearing my clothes, and she’s got a corporate credit card” – Maze, telling Lucifer just how far his mother can get without him.
“Yes. Usually works. He must’ve gone for a wank or something” – Lucifer, when Chloe asks him if he’s praying.

Summary
Tricia Helfer is great as the mother. Similar to Maze, she has a stiff and blunt way of interacting, but you can also see her picking up on all of Lucifer’s weaknesses. She pointedly notices the relationship between Lucifer and Chloe and she’s already gotten under Maze’s skin. She’s adapting quickly and that’s going to be a problem. Chloe has taken a backseat these first two episodes, but we did get some Trixie (my favorite character) this week and with Dan being demoted, he and Chloe seem to be moving closer together. Since this season focuses on mothers, I’m hoping for more interaction between Chloe and her own mother as well to contrast with Lucifer.
Is that Six in this picture?
Yup!
I love Tricia!
I got to interview her. Even more gorgeous in person.
😮 I would pass out. I have a huge crush on her.
