Earlier this month, Marvel Comics re-introduced She-Hulk to the world in their branding, “Marvel NOW!” The purpose of Marvel NOW! was to bring new readers into the fold of the Marvel Comics Universe - people like me.

Now, to be perfectly honest, I had never read a single issue of She-Hulk because I just wasn’t interested in her character. Not only that, but my interest in comics proper waned substantially over the years. It wasn’t until I was listening to one of my favorite geek-centric podcasts that I heard such raving reviews over She-Hulk that I decided to give it a shot.

I couldn’t be happier with my decision on this.

To quote the byline from Marvel themselves: “JENNIFER WALTERS IS…THE SHE-HULK! A stalwart Avenger, valued member of the FF, savior of the world on more than one occasion, she’s also a killer attorney with a pile of degrees and professional respect. A 7-foot-tall drink of cool, emerald water, she’s tough enough to knock out Galactus with one punch (possibly?) and has a heart bigger than the moon. But juggling cases and kicking bad guy butt is starting to be a little more complicated than she anticipated. With a new practice, a new paralegal and a mounting number of super villains she’s racking up as personal enemies, She-Hulk might have bitten off a little more than she can chew… but she just calls that Tuesday.”

For those who were unfamiliar with She-Hulk (like me), the very first page sums up the character of Jennifer Walters: She’s a very good attorney who keeps to herself when she’s not at work. It’s not until she gets gunned down by a crime boss that her life changes forever. Her cousin, who happens to be Dr. Bruce Banner (yes, THAT Bruce Banner), donates blood to save her life. This has the unintended side effect of irradiating her with the same gamma rays that affected him, thus turning her into the She-Hulk. Unlike Bruce, she’s able to control herself and not let her anger get the better of her; in fact, she remains in the She-Hulk façade full time now.

The best thing I’ve noticed about the first edition is that they transpose her home life with her work, and we get to see how she tediously balances the two. We also get to see how she takes out her frustrations when she feels wronged… damn robots. The art in this book is brilliantly done, with Javier Pulido putting in some good work to go along with Charles Soule’s snarky writing. Soule, who is a practicing attorney, uses his legal expertise – as well as his history in writing comic books – to create a world where She-Hulk is both a superhero and just an ordinary working girl in the big city.

Go pick this up as soon as you can; I highly recommend it.
