Killjoys – S4E4 – What to Expect When You’re Expecting… an Alien Parasite

Previously on Killjoys, “Bro-d Trip”

“When you choose your family, you choose your fight.’

Every week Killjoys brings the feels with a unified, familial element within a world on the edge of war. Delle Seyah is ready to give birth, Johnny trying to kill himself, and big brother D’avin trying to save him, per usual. It’s a lot for our crew, and top it off, the show starts of with a still unconscious Dutch.

But with all eyes on Delle Seyah, Mayko Nguyen is able to bring humanity to a character who has no conscience. At times, you have to remember Delle Seyah is surrounded by the very people she has tried to kill on numerous occasions.

The show takes what you assume to be a light moment with the impending birth, and quickly has it become a life or death situation as the very ability that allows her to heal, is now making it impossible for her to give birth. But thank god for Zeph coming to the rescue. What makes these scenes with Delle Seyah even more precious is that in order to live, she has to give up her immortality and become a vulnerable human. And for the first time in centuries, she’s able to have actual emotions and it’s to this child created between herself, Aneela, and D’avin. Talk about emotional overload.

But no one is going through it more than Dutch and Johnny. Dutch wakes up and finds out that Johnny’s been turned Hullen and placing the emotional baggage squarely on D’avin’s shoulders. With everything going on D’avin really is a stabilizing presence for everybody at this point, with no swings of emotions. Which, in contrast to the runaway playboy he was first introduced, shows well-earned character growth.

Outside or inside the green, Dutch is suffering — that’s by the psychotic and manipulative hands of The Lady and from Johnnys hurtful words when he realizes there is no way to save him from the corruptive influence of the green.

The scenes with the slow dawning realization that he might not be saved were some of the most distressing to watch; repeatedly banging his head against the wall and pulling against his chains to break his own neck. But thanks to Zeph’s medical skills they’re able to kill the parasite in Johnny and get him back to normal, but some might say thanks to convenient writing.

Of course this same method is how they’re able to save Delle Seyah. You have to die in order to live. But the one thread through this week’s episode was Dutch trying to keep The Lady at bay, and the belief that the answer to the story lies with a clueless Johnny.  Although, I think the answer is simply Johnny and Dutch’s love for each other being the key. Or not. Nonetheless they need to get ready before The Lady breaks her way out of The Green, with Aneela strewn to the side and forgotten.

What will our crew look like with a super being baby on board? Only time will time. But all in all, another fantastic, well-paced episode of Killjoys is in the bag.
