What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from finally putting up my naked Christmas tree to bring you the latest releases to home media for December 12, 2017. In this week’s episode, we discuss a “true story,” a spy spoof, dragons, and Sweet Christmas. Let’s get started.
Detroit (R)
Metascore: 78
On July 23, 1967, the Detroit police raided an unsanctioned club during a celebration for returning black vets. What happened next was a lot of racially-tinged violence and bloodshed. Told through the eyes of security guard Melvin Dismukes (John Boyega), this film tells the story of that fateful day. This film, which also stars Will Poulter, Algee Smith, and Jacob Latimore, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. This is a very important story, but it’s one that should have been told by a better director. It looks through the eyes of Boyega’s character, but the only people given true agency are the white characters. Kathryn Bigelow is a great director, but she should’ve given this one to someone else.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (R)

In this sequel to the surprise 2014 hit, the Kingsmen - led by Eggsy (Taron Egerton) - find themselves in unfamiliar territory: on the run. With their headquarters destroyed, they have to turn to their fellow agents across the pond: the Statesman. Once there, they have to join Tequila (Channing Tatum) in an attempt to save the world from the nefarious Poppy (Julianne Moore) and her drug cartel known as “The Golden Circle.” This film, which also stars Mark Strong, Halle Berry, and Elton John, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. This sequel misses a bit more than it hits, but it was still a bloody good time at the movies, and it’d still be a bloody good time at home. Give it a watch.
Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season
Metascore: 77
In the seventh season of HBO’s hit drama, things are starting to take shape. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is making her way to Westeros with Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) in tow as the new Hand of the Queen. After defeating Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) in the Battle of the Bastards, Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) has taken his place as the King of the North and returned Winterfell to House Stark. Cerise Lannister (Lena Headey) has taken the Iron Throne after incinerating the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) and his followers in the Sept of Baelor. But, as Ned Stark said seven years ago, “Winter is coming,” and it’s closer than they all might think. This series, which also stars Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, Jim Broadbent, and Tom Hopper, is available in a three disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a four disc DVD version. If you’re in with Game of Thrones, you’re in. I highly recommend this series.
Luke Cage: The Complete First Season
Metascore: 79
Luke Cage (Mike Colter) is a man living in Harlem trying to stay under the radar; he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and escaped prison. Given the “gift” of superhuman strength and unbreakable skin due to his time in prison, he does everything in his power to not get involved in drama. But, when crime boss Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali) begins turning Harlem into a bloodbath in the name of renovation, Cage steps out from the shadows to protect those he loves. This series, which also stars Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, and Rosario Dawson, is available in a four disc Blu-ray version. The first half of this show was gripping, but the second half fell into the standard superhero tropes. That being said, I still recommend this series.
