Good day, fine people! Joseph here, and I’m bringin you what’s new in Blu for February 5, 2013. This week’s episode features kids who won’t grow up, Denzel Washington, a gritty cop, a bizarre romantic comedy, and the worst MMA fighter of all time. All strapped in? Let’s get to it.

 

Peter Pan (G)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 83%

Join mischievous Peter Pan, the young boy who refuses to grow up, his hot-tempered pixie pal, Tinker Bell and the Darling children as they soar away to the mysterious Never-Never land where childhood lasts forever in this magical, musical adventure. Based on J.M. Barrie’s 1904 book. This movie comes in a three-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital copy pack and a two disc Bluray/DVD set. This is a childhood favorite, and I implore everyone to let their children watch it at least once.

 

 

Flight (R)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 77%

Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington stars in this “riveting and powerful nail-biting thriller” from Robert Zemeckis, the Academy Award®winning director of Forrest Gump and Cast Away.  Airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Washington) miraculously lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe.  But even as he’s being hailed for his heroic efforts, questions arise as to who or what was really at fault.  Action-packed, engrossing and powerful, Washington’s performance is being hailed as “a triumph” and one that “will be talked about for years.” This movie comes in a two-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy set and a single disc DVD set. I’m gonna be honest here; I love Denzel Washington as much as any straight man can. I was engrossed by this movie, and – despite the moments where it’s incredibly painful to watch – I will give this my pick of the week.

 

 

Alex Cross (R)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 12%

Based on the novel “Cross” by James Patterson and popularized by Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, Tyler Perry takes over as Dr. Alex Cross, a homicide detective/psychologist with the Detroit Police Department. Cross meets his match in a dangerous serial killer (Fox). The two face off in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, but when the mission gets personal, Cross is pushed to the edge of his moral and psychological limits. With a screenplay by Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson; the film is directed by Rob Cohen. This movie comes in a single disc Bluray + Digital Copy package and a DVD + Digital Copy package. If you’re one of Tyler Perry’s biggest fans and want to see what he can do when he branches out, this is for you. Otherwise, pick up J. J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” and watch a good movie where he branched out and did something different.

 

 

Celeste and Jesse Forever (R)

Celeste (Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) are high school sweethearts who married young and are now at a crossroads at the age of thirty. While Celeste is a success in business, Jesse is unemployed and adrift. Celeste thinks that if they divorce now they could still remain friends. Jesse passively accepts the decision even though he is still in love with her. As reality sets in, Celeste slowly and painfully realizes she has been cavalier about their relationship, but her timing with Jesse is less than fortuitous.  This movie comes in both a single disc Bluray set and a single disc DVD set. This is an odd romcom, and as such it’s worth checking out to see how it breaks the mold.

 

 

Here Comes the Boom (PG)

Former collegiate wrestler Scott Voss (Kevin James) is a 42-year-old, apathetic high school teacher. When budget cutbacks threaten to cancel some of the school’s programs and lay off its music teacher (Henry Winkler), Scott creates a scheme to raise money by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. Everyone thinks Scott is crazy – most of all the school nurse, Bella (Salma Hayek). In his quest, Scott gains something he never expected as he inspires his students and becomes a sensation that rallies the entire school. This movie comes in a single disc Bluray + Ultraviolet and a single disc DVD copy. It’s a quaint movie, but it’s also one that you’ll forget five minutes after it’s over. If you’re a Kevin James fan, check it out. Otherwise, let it go.
