What’s going on, ProFans? Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from waiting on DirecTV to bring you the latest releases in home media for January 13, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss a clear-cut reason to not get married, Liam Neeson doing what Liam Neeson does, a look at when gangsters were really gangsters, and proof positive that you can’t go home again. Ready to get down to it? Let’s go.

Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike star in this gripping thriller from renowned mastermind David Fincher and based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn. When Nick Dunne (Affleck) reports his wife Amy (Pike) has gone missing on their fifth anniversary, things begin to look rather dour for Nick. He becomes the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance, and he has to fight to prove his innocence.This film, which also stars Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry, is available in both a single disc Bluray version and a single disc DVD version. This movie was incredible, it was intense from beginning to end, and if Rosamund Pike doesn’t get an Oscar from it, I’ll riot. But, hopefully, she’ll be okay with the movie being my pick of the week.

In this adaptation of a Lawrence Brock novel, Liam Neeson stars as former NYPD officer Matt Scudder who works as an unlicensed private investigator to make ends meet. When he is hired by a heroin tracker to find the people who killed his wife, Scudder finds himself embroiled in a race against time against a group of psychopaths who have committed crimes like this before, and look to do it again. This movie is available in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie is a gritty look at what New York City used to be, and it’s certainly worth your time.
This Martin Scorcese production brings Nucky and his crew somewhere they haven’t been before: The Great Depression. This season - set six years from the season before - has The Great Depression in full swing, and at this point, Nucky is looking to go legit. He’s starting to look into working with some liquor producers and make a name for himself in a whole new light. This series, which stars Steve Buscemi, Michael K. Williams, Michael Shannon, Gretchen Mol, and Jeffrey Wright, is available in both a four disc Bluray + Digital Copy version and a four disc DVD version. This is another look at NYC from a different era, and it’s something that I highly recommend for everyone to check out.
Fleeing his country, Bassam al-Fayeed sets up life in America and becomes a practicing pediatrician. However, when he has to visit his country for his nephew’s wedding, and his father dies during his visit, he has to stay and help guide his brutally violent brother to become a better ruler than his father was. This series, which stars Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan, and Ashraf Barhom, is available in a three disc DVD version. I had honestly never heard of this series until just now, but it sounds interesting. It’s a look at a culture that is mostly unnoticed in American television - or ANY television for that matter. So, I’m going to take a look at it when I get a moment.
