News Ticker

BluTuesday – June 26, 2018

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from reveling in good personal news to bring you the latest releases to home media for June 26, 2018. In this week’s episode, we discuss giant robots fighting giant monsters, a cult classic, and a superhero I saw last night who was black. Let’s get to it.

Pacific Rim: Uprising (NOTE: This film was released on June 19)
Metascore: 44

John Boyega stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, the son of legendary Jaeger pilot Stacker Pentecost, as he lives his life not caring about anyone or anything. But, when his former co-pilot Lambert (Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (Cailee Spaeny) call him to action to help save the world against a new Kaiju threat, Jake has to suit up and help a new group of Jaeger pilots save the day. This film, which also stars Burn Gorman, Charlie Day, and Rinko Kikuchi, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version, and a single disc DVD version. In time, this film will be looked at as a cult classic like its predecessor. Unfortunately, today is not that day. That’s not to say this is a bad film; it’s just not as good as the one before it.

Dark Matter: Season Three (NOTE: This film was released on June 19)
Metascore: N/A

In the final season of the beloved SyFy show, the crew of the Raza find themselves separated and on a mission to find their way back to the Blink Drive. In order to get back what’s rightfully there, they have to take out their former friend Ryo Ishida (Alex Mallari, Jr.). They also find themselves going up against Ferrous Corp in a battle to the finish. This series, which also stars Melissa O’Neil, Anthony Lemke, and Jodelle Ferland, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a five disc DVD version. This was a great show that was ended too soon, but it’s still worth your time. Check it out.

Black Lightning: The Complete First Season
Metascore: 79

Cress Williams stars as Jefferson Pierce, the principal of a charter high school by day, but – due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, he reemerges as the vigilante superhero Black Lightning. Alongside longtime friend Peter Gambi (James Remar), he takes on Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) to clean up the streets. This series, which also stars Christine Adams, Nafessa Williams, and China Anne McClain, is available in a two disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a three disc DVD version. I saw a superhero last night, he was black; he said, “This is for the street, Black Lightning’s back!”

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
