Hey there, ProFans! I’m taking a break from playing Watch_Dogs to bring you the latest releases in home media for June 3, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss Marky Mark, a remake of a classic, Florida, and homicidal maniacs. Ready to get started? Let’s dive in.
Lone Survivor (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 75%
Lone Survivor, based on the bestselling novel of the same name, stars Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, and Eric Bana as Navy SEALs who are ambushed in Afghanistan during a routine mission. What happens next is nothing short of amazing, as these SEALs fight for their lives in hostile territory. This movie comes in both a two-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single-disc DVD version. This movie is full of nonstop action and suspense, and it is my pick of the week.
Robocop (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 49%
Joel Kinnaman (more on him later) stars as the eponymous character in this remake of the 1987 classic. Also starring Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson, this movie tells the story of Det. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) who is mortally wounded while in the line of duty. With his wife’s consent, multinational conglomerate OmniCorp chooses Murphy for the RoboCop program. He still longs to serve and protect, but at what cost? This movie comes in a two-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a single-disc Bluray version, and a single disc DVD version. This movie looks good, and having Samuel L. Jackson in it is a plus, but it’s a movie that is open to your own interpretation whether or not it’s something you might enjoy. I didn’t, but your mileage may vary.
Y’know all those news stories about Florida? The wild and the weird ones? This is essentially what this show is about. Starring Matt Passmore, this season of The Glades - which is its last - continues to take a look at the amazingly weirdness of Florida through the eyes of the fictional town of Palm Glade, up to and including a zombie apocalypse. This show is only available in a three-disc DVD set, but it seems like it’s certainly worth giving it a try.
This season of The Killing, starring Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman (remember him?), picks up about a year after the end of the second season, with Kinnaman’s Stephen Holder stumbling upon a grisly string of murders while searching for a runaway girl. Sarah Linden (Enos) gets drug back into the game to help her former partner, and the race against time begins in earnest. This series is only available in a three-disc DVD set, and it is bloody good. Check it out!
