BluTuesday - May 3, 2016

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from counting down the days before the end of school to bring you the latest releases to home media for May 3, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss a woman and her mop, a YA adaption that was here today and gone today, and the World’s Greatest Navy. We got a few titles to get to here, so let’s get to it.

Joy (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 61%

Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence) has had a rough life. She’s a single mother of two kids, and she’s struggling to make ends meet. Until…she invents the Miracle Mop, makes millions, and goes on to make a better life for her family and those close to her. This film, which also stars Robert DeNiro, Bradley Cooper, and Edgar Ramirez, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Let’s be honest here; this isn’t the greatest concept for a movie in the world. In fact, the elevator pitch sounds like a 60s era Sci-Fi special: “The Mop Saved My Life!” But, it’s decently acted, competently directed, and…it could serve as a viable alternative for Xanax.

The 5th Wave (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 17%

16 year old Cassie Sullivan (Chloë Grace Moretz) is in for the fight of her life. After an alien attack has bombed civilization back to the Stone Age, Cassie has to fight to maintain what’s left of her family and her sanity. But, will the will to survive be enough when you can’t tell friend from foe? This film, which also stars Nick Robinson, Ron Livingston, and Maggie Siff, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. Well…it looks pretty enough for yet another dystopian future where humanity can’t get their crap together. At least this one stars Hit Girl, right?

The Last Ship: The Complete Second Season

The crew of the USS Nathan James (DDG-151) returns with the fate  of humanity at stake. Commander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) has to balance helping paleomicrobiologist Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) find a cure for the Red Virus and keeping the rest of his ship sane. On top of that, there is a new enemy coming around the bend that wants nothing more than to prevent the mass production of a possible cure. This series, which also stars Adam Baldwin, Charles Parnell, and Marissa Neitling, is available in a three disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a three disc DVD version. As a veteran of the US Navy, I’m always acutely aware of any snafus Hollywood creates with my beloved branch; for example, the ending scene of Top Gun (which has a 30th anniversary release this week) is completely farfetched and would never happen under any circumstances. This series has the look down, although I don’t know where they’d find space on a guided missile destroyer for a lab. But, check the series out; I think it’s worth your time, and it’s my pick of the week.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Please feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
