Daredevil - S2E1 - Bang

Shots fired. Masked robbers fleeing a scene with the police hot on their trail. They’re picked off one by one by a figure leaping from the shadows and ricocheting billy clubs across the room. Right before we cut to the opening credits Matt Murdock stands above a church garbed in all his crimson Daredevil glory, a triumphant smile creeping across his face. Boys and girls, in case you forgot, this is Hell’s Kitchen and Matt has fully embraced his role as its Guardian Devil. Moreover, with the promise of The Punisher and Elektra looming over the horizon, season two certainly looks promising.

We can assume that a few months have passed since Matt, Foggy, and Karen took down Wilson Fisk, the self-styled Kingpin of Crime. Foggy seems to have gotten over his crush on Karen but still worries over Matt’s safety whenever he goes off to his other job as a masked vigilante. The seeds of a budding romance between Matt and Karen are bearing fruit after an after-work excursion to Josie’s bar. Nelson & Murdock Avocados at Law have been building quite a reputation as the legal defenders of the downtrodden and less fortunate of Hell’s Kitchen. It’s a pity that their clientele pays mostly in bananas and baked goods.

“Piss on them all.”

For a season premiere, I expected the pace to be fairly steady in order to familiarize us with the show’s current status quo. Boy, was I wrong. And boy, was I happy about it.

Wilson Fisk’s downfall has left a power vacuum in the city’s criminal underbelly. A certain surly and uncharismatic fellow by the name of Nesbitt lords over a clandestine gathering of what remains of the once-proud Irish Mafia. With Fisk behind bars and the other rival crime families gone, they have taken it upon themselves to fill this gaping void claiming that it is a brand new day in Hell’s Kitchen and the city is theirs for the taking. “Bang” certainly lived up to its name when Nesbitt’s rousing speech was cut short with a hail of gunfire and the blood-soaked, bullet-ridden introduction of The Punisher’s trademark brand of “No justice without vengeance.” One can’t help but chuckle at the short-lived reign of the Irish Mafia. And after the initial fight between Daredevil and the Punisher, I’m dying to watch the next episode.

Side Notes and Notable Quotes

Frank Castle hasn’t donned his trademark skull t-shirt yet, but we still have 12 more episodes to go.

“Do I look capable of healthy life choices?”-Foggy

“You can’t drink the water here.” It looks like Josie’s really needs to be on Spike TV’s Bar Rescue.

“Hell’s Kitchen is about to explode.” A little too on-the-nose, don’t you think?

“Every time I think we’ve seen it all, Hell’s Kitchen manages to sneak up and kick me right in the balls.”

“Where’s this asshole’s hand?”

Quote of the Week: “It’s not underwear, Foggy. Underwear is comfortable.”- Matt
