Agents of SHIELD - S2E13 - One of Us

Previously on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., ‘Who You Really Are’

Wanna Join The Crazy Train?

Just when you think Skye’s father, Calvin Zabo aka The Doctor, couldn’t be more psychotic, he’s come up with another plan to win Skye over. Zabo rounds up a group of people who were listed on S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Gifted Index. S.H.I.E.L.D. evaluated humans who had manipulated themselves physically and decided to put them on the Gifted Index. This meant these people would be physically restrained from using their gifts by any means possible. If the person seemed too dangerous, S.H.I.E.L.D. would have them killed. Geez, S.H.I.E.L.D., can’t you use your endless amounts of technology to help some cra-cra folks out? I thought S.H.I.E.L.D. was the good guys.

Zabo enlists a woman who had razor blades grafted into her finger nails, a man who was a tech genius, and a man with super-human strength due to a steroids experiment. The crazy-ass doctor plays on the gifted’s sensitive emotions and convinces them they had been wronged by S.H.I.E.L.D., and he is there to help them. Zabo’s needs this group to help him take down Coulson, who killed the man Zabo had been wanting to kill for decades and to get Skye.

Standing On Shaky Ground

Skye is constantly being monitored. Thanks to May’s advice, Skye feels she is getting her powers under control. She is ready to get back to the way things were as a field agent. Skye and Coulson discuss how she will be placed on the Gifted Index. However, Coulson and the team are very supportive of helping Skye. Secretly, Coulson and May are still leery about Skye controlling her powers. Along with being monitored, Skye will have a psych evaluation. Coulson requests May contact her ex-husband, Andrew (guest star, Blair Underwood) for Skye’s evaluation. Although he was reluctant, Andrew agreed to May’s request. During the evaluation he learns Skye is not emotionally prepared to return to the field. While Skye is sleeping, the whole airplane begins to shake and her monitors go off. Andrew, May, Fitz, and Simmons go rushing into Skye’s room. Andrew tells her when she thinks she is controlling her powers, she is actually pushing them aside.

Insane In The Brain

Zabo and his new band of super villains break into an asylum that housed two of the most dangerous of the Gifted. They left with Angar, the one who could put any living human or animal into catatonia with a mere whisper. Zabo and the super villains take a road trip to Coulson’s home town.

Meanwhile, Coulson and Bobbi enter the asylum in search of Zabo and his crew. Bobbi is attacked by a huge, snarling man who says, “You shouldn’t be down here.” After Bobbi puts him down, she and Coulson move on to locate the second patient. They discover he was not there, and a message was left on the wall that said, “FIGHT ON.” This triggers a memory for Coulson. Zabo and his crew will be in Coulson’s hometown waiting for him.

Are You Ready For Some Football?

As Coulson and Bobbi head to his hometown, Coulson realizes from the message means he will find Zabo and the super villains at the football field where his dad coached. He calls May for backup. Without informing the others, May takes off in the plane with the crew in tow. A furious Andrew and Skye confront May about her abrupt takeoff.

Coulson hears a ranting Zabo over the loud speaker at the press box, but Coulson and Bobbi keep hidden in hopes May will arrive soon. Zabo attempts to lure Coulson onto the field by throwing slurs about S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson doesn’t respond until Zabo mentions hurting the students. Coulson immediately enters the field and sees students laying in the bleachers and birds on the ground. Coulson reminds Zabo this is between them only and to let the students go.

Zabo insists the students are unable to go because their potential has been inhibited just like S.H.I.E.L.D. did to the Gifted. May arrives with a gun pointed to Skye’s head. She tells Zabo that Skye is now on the Index.

May says, “It’s your choice. Contained or put down?”

Threatening to put the whole town in a catatonic state, Zabo hands the microphone to Angar. As Angar opens his mouth, the confrontation between Zabo and Coulson is interrupted by an electric, blue forcefield that surrounds Zabo. The man with no eyes appears. Grabbing Zabo, he disappears as quickly as he came. The battle begins. Coulson versus Angar, May versus Roid Rage Dude, and Bobbi versus the chick with the razor blade finger nails.

Andrew grabs Skye, and they run off the field. As Coulson takes down the tech villain, the ground begins to shake. They all look at Skye as she tries to regain control. Skye falls to the ground. Awakening on the plane, Simmons tells Skye she has over seventy-five hairline fractures from her clavicle to her fingers. Andrew elaborates Skye was not stopping her powers. She was directing them inward. Simmons tells Coulson the Gifted are divided into two kinds. Those that have man-made powers, and those like Skye and Raina who have powers that come from within. Coulson tells her to keep this information between themselves.

Got A Secret, Can You Keep It?

Mack has held Hunter captive to keep him from telling Coulson that Bobbi and Mack have a secret. It is finally revealed that Bobbi and Mack are working for the real S.H.I.E.L.D.

Wh-What??

Score | 8/10Things I liked about this episode:
  • This episode gave an insight into a villain’s point of view. I actually felt empathetic towards the super villains.
  • Skye trying to dig some dirt about May’s personal life from her ex-husband. Skye’s nosey like that.
  • Fitz and Simmons are discussing how May and Andrew are perfect for each other. What they describe actually reflects upon their own broken relationship.
  • Kyle MacLachlan’s portrayal of Zabo as the lead, psychotic villain is spot on. Can you say CRAZY?
  • The action scenes were kick-ass.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes are constantly leaving me guessing. After watching this episode, I was left with these unanswered questions:

  • Why was Skye given powers to become a Kree weapon if the powers turn against her while when she maintains control? Is this the Kree’s fail safe with the Inhumans?
  • Are Bobbi and Mack working for the REAL S.H.I.E.L.D.? What proof do they have, and why is Coulson unaware?
