Amadeus Cho is The Totally Awesome Hulk

Although the super secretive series won’t be on shelves until December, The Totally Awesome Hulk continued to tease about the identity of the next Jade Giant. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Frank Cho, the duo guarantees this new Hulk will introduce a highly entertaining and unique spin on a character renown for his destructive behavior and typically monosyllabic responses.

Here are two teaser images sent to us by Marvel:

Hmmmm.

“This Hulk actually’s got a pretty big mouth on him”, Pak stated with Comicbook. “So he probably wouldn’t limit himself to a single word. But I’ll go with an oldie but a goodie: INCREDIBLE. Because that beloved adjective is going to be entirely relevant: You won’t believe what we’re doing here.”

Unlike the previous teaser that obscured the arm and face of the new Hulk, the latest version appears to have included some type of disguise; possibly a mask or a bandanna. Theories had been rampant about who the new Hulk may be, but given this new version of promo art, it only broadens the field even further! Is he Amadeus Cho? Crusher Creel? Hercules? Steve Rogers? Matt Murdock? Danny Rand?

Well, we now know Amadeus Cho will be the new Hulk, and the first Korean-American character to lead their own series, with Korean-American creators at the helm. Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief, Alex Alonso, explained to Entertainment Weekly why Cho was chosen:

What happened is, we were at an editorial retreat, and we were talking about revitalizing individual titles and the types of things we could do to do that. As a former Hulk editor, I just felt like…we’ve seen Banner’s story for so long, and the burden that he carries, with the weight of the Hulk on his shoulders. Perhaps the most interesting thing is to see how someone else shoulders that burden, and immediately, Amadeus came to mind for a lot of different reasons. One of them is that physically, he’s like Banner: he’s the 98-pound weakling who’s had everything but the physical aspect to make him seem super cool. And secondarily is that he’s so different from Banner. He shares the monstrous intellect but he’s so different — he’s a teenage kid, who’s hasn’t lived much yet. When Banner inherited the burden of being the Hulk, he was an adult. And I think that it showed in the way that he responded to it. Amadeus is a plucky kid. He’s got a chip on his shoulder, he’s the fifth or sixth smartest guy in the world according to the official rankings, and I think he’s just going to carry himself very differently with that power.
