Arrow - S6E21 - Docket No. 11-19-41-73
Previously on Arrow, “Shifting Allegiances”
This episode was one of the best of the season, which given how excruciating trial episodes can be (*cough* The Flash *cough*) was a minor miracle.
The Good
It is always great to see Tommy’s face again, even if it’s just someone in a mask (or actually a Nazi doppelgånger as is wont to happen). I generally find Human Target to be an irritating deus ex machina, but this plot line worked better than most this season. Arrow is strongest when it leans into its long history, and the emotions that flashed across Oliver’s face in the background when Tommy came into the courtroom was a reminder that Amell isn’t always a one-note actor.
The feud between the Original Team Arrow and New Team Arrow had really been dragging on, and bringing out the worst on both sides, so it was nice to see Oliver and Rene apologize and make up like adults.
The Bad
The opening sequence of Diggle rescuing Human Target was some of the worst fight choreography I’ve ever seen on this show, which is usually pretty reliable with its action sequences, if nothing else. A dozen guards armed with machine guns managing not to hit Diggle as he slowly floated down towards them in a parachute beggared belief, and Diggle not ducking the exploding car was laughable.
Diggle was also saddled with another scene this episode that made him look incredibly foolish, with him and Dinah attempting to attack Diaz in broad daylight on the steps of the courthouse, only to (predictably) be encircled by every corrupt cop in the city. It’s okay for the characters to make bad plans sometimes (and they certainly do), but this felt incredibly out of character for arguably the two most tactical people on the show.
