What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from my constant diet of Goody’s Headache Powder and Sudafed to bring you the latest releases to home media for November 29, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss high comedic glamour, a Disney classic come to life, and Steven Spielberg’s return to cinema. Let’s jump right into it.
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 60%
Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) make their big screen debut in this film based on the wildly successful BBC comedy. Enjoying the glitz and glamour like they normally do, they find themselves in the center of a media maelstrom when they’re blamed for killing Kate Moss. These two are then forced to go on the run and clear their names, all the while soaking up the sights and sounds of the French Riviera. This film, which also stars Julia Sawalha, Chris Colfer, and Jon Hamm, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD + Digital Copy version. This film was made for fans of AbFab, and it shows. If you’re in for a penny, you’re in for a pound with this film.
Pete’s Dragon (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 86%
In this live action retelling of the Disney classic, we meet Pete (Oakes Fegley), a 10 year old child with no family who lives in the forests of the Pacific Northwest with a dragon named Elliott. When Pete has a run-in with Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), a forest ranger, their lives are turned upside down as they discover the truth behind the magical dragon. This film, which also stars Robert Redford, Oona Laurence, and Wes Bentley, is available in a single disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Disney has been on a tear lately remaking their animated classics, and this is another one to add to the list. Whether it lives up to the old charm or it needs to sit by the wayside is entirely up to you. At the very least, it’s fun for the family.
The BFG (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 75%
Based on the Roald Dahl story of the same name, this film tells the story of Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), an orphaned London girl, as she goes on an adventure with the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance) on orders from the Queen (Penelope Wilton). Their mission is to travel to Giant Country and round up all of the man-eating Giants. This film, which also stars Rebecca Hall, Jemaine Clement, and Rafe Spall, is available in a single disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is another Walt Disney Studios production that will captivate the minds and hearts of families the world over. Check it out.
