Hey, ProFans! Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from my studies to bring you the latest in new releases in home media for April 15, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss a short buddy cop movie, a great advertisement for daydreaming, and Dame Judi Dench. All comfy? Well, let’s get down to business.
Ride Along (PG-13)

For the past two years, high school security guard Ben (Kevin Hart) has been trying to show decorated detective James (Ice Cube) that he’s more than just a video game junkie who’s unworthy of James’ sister. When Ben finally gets accepted into the police academy, James invites him on a ride-along designed to scare the hell out of him and ultimately demonstrate if Ben has what it takes to take care of his sister. But when the wild night leads them to the most notorious criminal in the city, James will find that his new partner’s rapid-fire mouth is just as dangerous as the bullets speeding at it. Also starring John Leguizamo and Laurence Fishburne, Ride Along is an action-packed comedy with big thrills and even bigger laughs. This movie comes in both a two-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single-disc DVD version. As far as comedies go, this was aight, but I liked it better when it was Rush Hour.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (PG)

Ben Stiller directs and stars in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, James Thurber’s classic story of a daydreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job, along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig), is threatened, Walter takes action in the real world, embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined. This movie comes in a single-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version (not sure how, but okay) and a single-disc DVD version. This movie strained all credulity, and it showed at the box office. I’d recommend giving this a pass.
Philomena (PG-13)

When she fell pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) was sent to the convent to be looked after as a fallen woman. She cared for her baby for three years until the Church took him from her and sold him, like countless others, to America for adoption. Coerced into signing a document promising never to attempt to see her child again, she nonetheless spent the next fifty years secretly searching for him, unaware that he was searching for her from across the Atlantic. This movie comes in both a single-disc Bluray + Digital Copy version and a single-disc DVD version. I find Steve Coogan to be brilliant, and I love Dame Judi Dench. This is my pick of the week; you’re welcome.
