What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from dodging pollen to bring you the latest releases to home media for April 26, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss a spooky shrink, a fight for vengeance, a buddy cop “comedy,” and an American hero. We got a few titles here to get to, so let’s get started.
Backtrack (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 21%
Psychologist Peter Bower (Adrien Brody) has a problem. He somehow discovers that the patients he’s been seeing aren’t alive; that’s right, he’s talking to ghosts. Searching for answers, he decides to delve into his own past to find out why this is happening to him so he can put right was once went wrong. This film, which also stars Sam Neill, Robin McLeavy, and Chloe Bayliss, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Oh, Adrien Brody…what happened to you? You were on top of the world one minute, now you’re doing direct-to-video stuff. Well, at least you’re working.
Jane Got a Gun (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 41%
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) is just your average, hard-working woman who - along with her husband Bill (Noah Emmerich) - has built a life for her and her family in the rugged western plains. However, when Bill comes home full of bullets, she finds out that he’s had a run-in with John Bishop (Ewan McGregor) and his ruthless gang. She then has to turn to former lover Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) to help protect everything she holds dear. This film, which also stars Rodrigo Santoro, Boyd Holbrook, and Alex Manette, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This film had a pretty troubled production, with cast members and production staff coming and going at a pretty quick clip. Everything worked out, but whether or not that’s for the best is up for debate. Still, if you like westerns, this is pretty solid.
Ride Along 2 (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 15%
Following the events of Ride Along, Ben (Kevin Hart) is now a police officer who has dreams of becoming a detective like his future brother-in-law James (Ice Cube). The duo travel to Miami to track down a lead on a drug bust, but things go awry. So, they have to not only solve this case, but get back in time for Ben’s wedding day. This film, which also stars Tika Sumpter, Ken Jeong, and Olivia Munn, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. I’m not a fan of comedies, so I can’t accurately judge this movie. But, if you’re a fan of either comedies or Kevin Hart, then have fun.
The Last Man on the Moon (NR)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 93%
For astronaut Eugene Cernan, he achieved the dream of a lifetime by stepping foot on the moon and leaving his daughter’s initials there for all time. But, the hard part for him was coming home and dealing with the fame of being the last man on the moon. This documentary, which features archival footage and compelling visual effects, is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. Captain Cernan’s career was a fascinating one, and it’s also a cautionary tale of the price of fame. I highly recommend this to everyone, and it’s my pick of the week.
