BluTuesday - August 20, 2013

Well, hello there! Joseph here, and I’ve got the newest Bluray releases for August 20, 2013. In this week’s episode, we talk about a movie that nobody wanted, a return to Prohibition, the dish best served cold, real marriage material, LL Cool J, and life’s lessons learned. We got a lot to get to today, so let’s not waste any more time.

Scary Movie 5 (Unrated) (Blu-ray + DVD + UltraViolet) (NR) – Note: the original release was PG-13

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 4%

Happily-married couple Dan and Jody begin to notice some bizarre activity once they bring their lost nieces and nephew home. But when the chaos expands into Jody’s job as a ballet dancer and Dan’s career as an Ape researcher, they realize their family is being stalked by a nefarious demon. Together, with the advice of a psychic and the aid of numerous surveillance cameras, they must figure out how to get rid of it before it’s too late. This movie comes in a two disc Bluray/DVD + Ultraviolet version and a single disc DVD version. No one wanted to see this movie; I even tried to fight mentioning it here. But, we needed a movie to review, and this was it. Sorry.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray)

Picking up sixteen months after the season two finale, Season Three begins on New Year’s Eve, 1922, with 1923 mere hours away. The Roaring ’20s are about to start. Though the economy is booming, alcohol has become scarce, competition is fierce, and gangster violence is heating up. Amidst this backdrop, Nucky, whose marriage to Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) has become a sham after she signed away his highway windfall to the church, faces new competition in the person of Gyp Rosetti (new cast member Bobby Cannavale), who builds a new strategic bulkhead between New York and Atlantic City in an effort to siphon off Nucky’s alcohol business. The conflict brings out the best and worst in Nucky, who proves his brutal mettle in a series of violent encounters. New and familiar faces also undergo compelling metamorphoses as the latest 12-episode season unfolds. This series comes in both a seven disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a five disc DVD version. I love Steve Buscemi; he’s a talented actor, and it’s certainly worth checking out this show for him alone.

Revenge: The Complete Second Season

Emily Thorne returns to the Hamptons with a vengeance. Her enemies may be the same, but her mission now takes on a new, suspenseful twist. Feel the power of television’s most seductive series, as the action and the passion hit new heights in all 22 episodes of Revenge: The Complete Second Season on DVD. Emily will stop at nothing to uncover the secrets of her father’s murder, but the web of deceit is larger than she ever imagined. Now, with her mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) in the picture, even more will be revealed. This series is only available in a five disc DVD version. This is a thrilling series, and it’s certainly something worth checking out.

The Good Wife: The Fourth Season

The Good Wife is a gripping blend of courtroom drama, politics and steamy personal relationships that stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick, a wife and mother who reclaims control of her personal and professional lives after her husband, Peter, is embroiled in a sex and political corruption scandal. As Alicia adapts to changes at home and at work as a defense attorney, she continues to redefine and rediscover the woman she wishes to be. This series is only available in a six disc DVD version. This show is sexy and fun, and Julianna Margulies commands the screen. This is my pick of the week.

NCIS: Los Angeles - The Fourth Season

The fourth Season of NCIS: Los Angeles finds the unit in crisis, with team leader G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) accused of murdering a suspect in cold blood. The danger mounts as operations manager Hettie Lange (Linda Hunt) faces threats from her past. The team endures, only to uncover a secret that could jeopardize the people closest to Navy SEAL Sam Hanna (LL Cool J). With the ace field work of Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and LAPD liaison Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen), along with the brilliance of tech specialists Eric Beale (Barrett Foa) and Nell Jones (Renée Felice Smith), no evidence escapes scrutiny. This series is only available in a six disc DVD version. There’s a running joke here in the ProFan offices that I’m the only one who cares about the NCIS shows, and that’s fairly true. That being said, it’s still a fun show – albeit a show that could lose about four episodes a season and still be okay. Give it a go.

Parenthood: Season Four

Family dynamics are shifting for all three generations of The Braverman clan in the critically acclaimed fourth season of Parenthood. Everything changes for Adam and Kristina as they receive shocking news, while Sarah contemplates how her priorities affect her future. As Julia and Joel adjust to life with their adopted son, Crosby and Jasmine settle into their roles as husband and wife. Featuring guest stars Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Jason Ritter (The Event), watch all 15 smart, funny and heartwarming episodes about life’s unexpected hurdles and those who help us conquer them: family.  This series is only available in a three disc DVD version. I love Lauren Graham, and I’ll give kudos to anything she’s involved in…even Bad Santa. This is worth checking out.

That’s all I have for today’s edition. Did I miss anything? Got any questions or comments? Please feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
