What’s going on, ProFans? Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from fawning over Guardians of the Galaxy to bring you the latest releases in home media for August 5, 2014. In this week’s episode, we talk about another YA book brought to film, a freaky mirror, David Duchovny’s raging libido, and the geekiest show on TV. All ready to get started? It’s go time!
Divergent [Blu-ray]

Set in dystopian Chicago, Divergent tells the story of Tris (Shailene Woodley) who is a special child; in this future, there are five different factions where you start in a certain faction and stay there for the rest of your life. Tris is classified as a Divergent, and she is a dangerous commodity in this new world. Along with Four (Theo James), a member of the Dauntless faction, they must get to the bottom of a conspiracy that could bring the organization to its knees. This movie - also starring Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, and Kate Winslet - is available in a single disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD + Digital Copy version. If you are a fan of the book series, you may enjoy this. If not, then…you may wanna skip this one; it actually made Shailene Woodley seem like a horrible actress, and we all know that’s not true.

This movie tells the story of Tim Russel (Brenton Thwaites) - a young man who has spent years of his life in a mental institution due to the brutal murder of his parents 11 years prior. Released into the custody of his sister Kaylie (Amy Pond - I mean, Karen Gillan), Kaylie convinces her brother to get down to what she feels is the cause of their parents’ death: a cursed antique mirror. They soon discover that there are some secrets that need to remain in the past…This movie is available in both a single disc Bluray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. We already know how I feel about horror movies, and - even though I like Amy Pond…er…Karen Gillan, I don’t think I’m gonna break my “no horror” rule for this. Even though this was made in my home state of Alabama (even in my hometown), I still won’t be watching any of this.
In the final season of this Showtime series, Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is striving to put his tortured past behind him and finally find the happiness that has eluded him for far too long. The problem with putting one’s past behind them is that it sometimes comes back to haunt them. This series is available in a two disc DVD version. This is a fitting end to a dramedy series that’s lasted seven years. Send it out with a smile.
Once thought to be the final season of this groundbreaking comedy, Community centers around the original study group (Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Allison Brie, and Donald Glover) one year later as they go through a series of (mis)adventures at Greendale Community College. This series is available in a two disc DVD version. I don’t think anything I can say would do this show any justice, other than to give it my pick of the week.
