BluTuesday - December 16, 2014

How’s it going, ProFans? I’m taking a break from Christmas shopping (heh…shopping) to bring you the latest releases in home media for December 16, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss the heroes in a half shell, a labyrinth of a YA movie, spies in the far-flung past of the 1980s, and Halle Berry. Ready to get started? Grab a cup of eggnog and let’s go for broke.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 22%

From visionary director/producer Michael Bay (no, he really is a visionary; both The Rock and Armageddon are in the Criterion Collection) and visionary Bigfoot fanatic Megan Fox comes the retelling of the cult comic book and children’s cartoon classic franchise. When Shredder and his soldiers known only as the Foot Clan terrorize New York, four mutated turtles rise to the occasion along with intrepid reporter April O’Neil to save the city and the world. This movie, which also stars Will Arnett, William Fichtner, and the voices of Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shaloub, is available in a three disc 3D Bluray/Bluray/DVD + DIgital Copy version, a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. I’m sure this is an entertaining movie, I’m sure it’s a lot of fun, and I’m sure that it has its fans. I have not seen this movie, and - unless someone wants to get it for me for Christmas - I won’t be seeing it. Not because I’m nostalgic for the original, but because the concept isn’t interesting to me. But, if you have people in your family who loved the movie, this is a good stocking stuffer.

Maze Runner

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 63%

Based on a series of YA novels, this movie tells the story of Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), a young man who awakens to find himself trapped in a gigantic maze with a group of other boys. Outside of a mysterious organization known only as W.C.K.D., he doesn’t remember anything about the outside world. Forced to use that knowledge - as well as the environment around him, he has to find out a way to free his new friends and get out alive. This movie, which also stars Will Poulter, is available in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie is one of those that flew under the radar for me, but it seems like it would be at least an interesting watch during the holiday season - especially since most of the good TV shows are on hiatus until the winter.

Americans: Season 2

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys star in the continuation of this blockbuster series! With technology marching on and the Cold War tensions at an all-time high, KGB operatives Elizabeth and Philip Jennings have to fight to keep their cover intact, as well as continuing to protect their family. This season is available in a four disc DVD version. This show is a lot of fun, and the thrills keep you on the edge of your seat. This show is my pick of the week, hands down.

Extant: Season 1

When astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry…stop laughing) returns from a year long solo mission on a space station, she doesn’t come back alone; she’s pregnant with…something. Along with her husband John (Goran Visnjic) and their son Ethan, they have to make sense of the new discovery and wonder what effect this will have on not only her family, but humanity as a whole. This Steven Spielberg series, which also stars Camryn Manheim and Hiroyuki Sanada, is available in both a four disc Bluray version and a four disc DVD version. This is not something I’ve ever been interested in, and it is something I wouldn’t watch if our Lord and Savior Beysus Christ came and blessed me with it. But, if you like it, I love it.

Well, that’s all I got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
