Hey-o! Joseph here, and I’ve got a fresh stack of new Bluray releases for February 26, 2013. This week’s episode features Scientoloty…sorta, a human chameleon, and surfing; lots and lots of surfing. Ready to rock? Let’s get to it.

 

The Master (R)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 86%

Paul Thomas Anderson writes and directs this drama about a US Navy veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who seeks salvation in the company of a charismatic cult leader. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Freddie Quell, a troubled drifter who arrives home to post-WWII America shaken, disillusioned and fearful of the future. A raging alcoholic, Quell cannot begin to make sense of his deeply-rooted inner torment, let alone surmount it. When he meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the ‘master’ of a cult called The Cause, an intense and ambiguous relationship develops between the two men. But do Dodd’s teachings hold the power to turn Quell’s life around? This movie comes in both a two disc Blruay/DVD version and a single disc DVD version. This movie was swept up in a swirl of controversy: is this about Scientology? Is it not? What the hell is it about? I recommend watching it for yourself and making that determination from there.

 

Holy Motors (NR)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 90%

Over the course of a single day, Monsieur Oscar travels by limousine around Paris to a series of nine appointments, transforming into new characters at each stop. He is a captain of industry, a gypsy beggar, a digitized ninja warrior (and reptilian sex god!), a gibberish-spewing troglodyte, the melancholy father of a teenage daughter, a shadowy assassin, a dying old man, and a thwarted lover reuniting with a past flame. This movie comes in both a single disc Bluray version and a single disc DVD version. This is a trippy flick, and if you do watch it, make sure you’re drunk first. That may be the only way this thing makes sense.

 

 

Chasing Mavericks (PG)

Chasing Mavericks is the inspirational true story of real life surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston). When 15 year old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing. Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing real wave footage ever captured on film. This movie comes in both a single disc Bluray + Ultraviolet version and a single disc DVD version. This movie has some unbelievable surfing scenes in it, but it also has the most unbelievable American accent ever caught on film (I’m looking at you, Gerard Butler).
