What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from braving this Alabama winter to bring you the latest releases to home media for January 16, 2018. In this week’s episode, we discuss the long-awaited sequel to everyone’s favorite “deep” sci-fi movie, the worst birthday ever, and a special kind of lawyer. Let’s get to work.
Blade Runner 2049 (R)
Metascore: 81
Set three decades after the events of the first movie, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner, finds a new secret that threatens to throw the remainders of society into chaos. In order to save the day, K has to go find the legendary blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). This film, which also stars Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, and Lennie James, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version, and a single disc DVD + Digital HD version. This movie - hell, this franchise - gets a lot of flak, and deservedly so, but it has a level of continuity that’s impressive; the technology is essentially the same, the filming techniques are impressive, and it’s still as overwrought as its predecessor. If you’re a fan of the original, this will be right up your alley. If not, it won’t be.
Happy Death Day (PG-13)
Metascore: 57
Theresa “Tree” Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) is your typical Hollywood co-ed; vain, narcissistic, and generally unlikeable. But, when she’s killed on her birthday - only to wake up on her birthday again, she has to use her knowledge of the past to find her killer. This film, which also stars Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, and Rachel Matthews, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I don’t do horror. But, I do like a good time loop story, and this is a bit of Friday the 13th mixed with Groundhog Day. So, uh…I don’t know; it’s at the very least intriguing. Plus, it managed to make 50 Cent not so damn cloying. Check it out.
Better Call Saul: Season Three
Metascore: 87
In the third season of this AMC dramedy, Chuck (Michael McKean) and Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) are at odds. Thanks to Chuck’s schemes at the end of last season, Jimmy and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) are struggling to keep their fledgling law firm - and romance - alive. Meanwhile, Mike (Jonathan Banks) is on the lookout for a mysterious adversary who knows everything about his business. This series, which also stars Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando, and Giancarlo Esposito, is available in a three disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a three disc DVD version. The events leading to Breaking Bad are coming into play, and it promises to be a thrill ride getting there. Give it a watch.
