What’s going on, ProFans? Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from this fanatical weather down in my neck of the woods to bring you the latest releases in home media for January 20, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss the weirdest and most adorable trolls ever, “science,” Tom Hardy, and another thing that ProFan Joseph will never watch. Ready to get to it? Let’s get to it.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 74%
This children’s movie tells the story of an orphan boy named Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) who is taken in by a community of trolls called the Boxtrolls (natch) who live under the city of Cheesebridge. When Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley) comes up with a plan to get rid of the Boxtrolls, it’s up to Eggs and his new friend Winnifred (Elle Fanning) to come up with a plan to save the only family he’s ever had. This disc is available in a two disc 3D Bluray/Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. This is an adorable movie, and it’s something that I recommend for every child and every child at heart.
Lucy (Blu-ray + DVD + DIGITAL HD with UltraViolet)

Luc Besson (Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita) brings you his next extraordinary heroine. Scarlett Johansson plays the titular character of Lucy, an unassuming clubgoer. When Lucy gets caught up in an incident that turns her into an unwilling drug mule, she instead becomes one of the most powerful people on earth; the drug helps to unlock the full potential of your brain, and she uses it to wreak havoc on her captors - and anyone who stands in her way. This movie, which also stars God - I mean, Morgan Freeman, is available in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. If you can get beyond the fact that it’s the worst type of science imaginable (we use 100% of our brain anyway, we just don’t use it all the time; if we did, our brains would overload and we’d be vegetables), it’s actually a pretty deep thriller. Check it out.

Tom Hardy has the innate ability to turn an everyday schlub into someone you can instinctively root for, and he does it here as well. Hardy plays Bob Saginowski, a NYC bartender who - along with his ruthless employer Uncle Marv (James Gandolfini) - gets caught in a robbery gone wrong, and they have to decide whether or ot they’re going to be loyal to the streets or survive to fight another day. Along the way, they also have to deal with a debt to the mob that they can’t pay, thus making matters that much worse for them. This movie, which also stars Noomi Rapace, is available in both a single disc Bluray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie is a throwback to the crime thrillers of the 70s and early 80s, and it’s certainly worth a look; it’s also my pick of the week.

In this movie - a prequel to 2013’s The Conjuring - we focus on the origin story of the creepy doll Annabelle. John Ford (Ward Horton) has found the perfect collectible for his pregnant wife Mia (Annabelle Wallis) - a vintage doll in a white wedding dress. However, when theFords are the victim of a home invasion by a satanic cult gone horribly wrong, the doll gets possessed and all hell breaks loose. This movie, which is available in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Listen; I got bored writing this recap. John and Mia Ford sound like they need to be serving toast somewhere instead of being haunted by a creepy looking doll. If I never see anything else about this movie, I think I’ll be okay.
