BluTuesday - January 21, 2014
Hey there, ProFans! Joseph here, and I’m here to bring you the latest in home media for January 21, 2014. In this week’s episode, we talk about Tom Hanks, a modern day B movie, and a TV show that I will NEVER see. Ready to go? Let’s jump in it.
Captain Phillips (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 93%
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Based on a true story, the film focuses on the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks, Best Actor, 1993, Philadelphia; Best Actor, 1994, Forrest Gump), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Academy Award nominee Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. The two men are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control. This movie comes in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a powerful movie, and I want to give kudos to Barkhad Abdi for getting nominated for an Academy Award in his first acting role. Also, this movie is my pick of the week, based in no small part to Tom Hanks himself. But, it’s a great movie; check it out.
Machete Kills (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 29%
In Machete Kills, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man - he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet. This movie comes in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Remember when I said Captain Phillips was a great movie? This is the inverse of that. If you like to see Sofía Vergara look hot (and, who doesn’t?), then…find screenshots online. Danny Trejo scares me, but I’d be scared to watch this movie more.
The Returned: The Complete First Season
In an idyllic French Alpine village, a seemingly random collection of people find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes. What they do not yet know is that they have been dead for several years, and no one is expecting them back. Buried secrets emerge as they grapple with this miraculous and sinister new reality, struggling to reintegrate with their families and past lovers. But it seems they are not the only ones back from the dead. Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders that bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past. This series comes in both a two disc Bluray version and a three disc DVD version. This sounds interesting, but…I’m good.
That’s all I got for now. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss anything you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.
Until next time…
