BluTuesday - January 31, 2017

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from preparing for the Super Bowl (Go Falcons!) to bring you the latest releases to home media for January 31, 2017. In this week’s episode we discuss Tom Cruise, a beautiful story about Chessmasters, and The Rock. Let’s get started, shall we?

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 37%

In this sequel to the 2012 surprise hit, Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is out to clear his name. After being accused of murder, his only confidant is Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), who is also on the run after being accused of espionage. Along the way, they run into Samantha Dayton (Danika Yarosh), a young girl who may or may not be Jack’s daughter. Lots of moving parts in this one, folks. This film, which also stars Patrick Heusinger, Robert Knepper, and Aldis Hodge, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a fun little diversion from everyday life. It’s not great, but it’s not horrible, either. If you’re a Jack Reacher fan, give this a look.

Queen of Katwe (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%

This film, based on a true story, tells the tale of Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga), an Ugandan girl who takes her family out of poverty thanks to a love of chess brought on by Robert Katende (David Oyelowo). Alongside her mother Nakku Harriet (Lupita Nyong’o), Phiona rises the ranks and becomes an international sensation. This film, which also stars Martin Kabanza, Taryn “Kay” Kyaze, and Ivan Jacobo, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a beautiful story; one I hadn’t heard of until this movie came out. It’s definitely worth your time.

Ballers: The Complete Second Season

Spencer Strasmore (Dwayne Johnson) returns in the second season of the HBO hit drama. Spencer is having to face his own demons as he struggles for success as a financial master. Meanwhile, Ricky (John David Washington) has to figure out life as a free agent, Charles (Omar Miller) has to juggle being a dad and a professional athlete, and Vernon (Donovan Carter) has to deal with his off-field decisions. This series, which also stars Rob Corddry, Troy Garity and Arielle Kebbel, is available in a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a two disc DVD + Digital Copy version. This is a fun series, and it’s definitely worth checking out. Besides, it’s The Rock; he’s fun in everything.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
