What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from recovering from my birthday weekend to bring you the latest releases to home media for July 17, 2018. In this week’s episode, we discuss a quirky animated film, an interesting comedy, The Rock, a high comedy, and the third season of a beloved franchise. Let’s get to it.
Isle of Dogs (PG-13)
Metascore: 82
From visionary director Wes Anderson comes the story of Atari Kobayashi (Koyu Rankin) and his quest to find his bodyguard dog on Trash Island after Mayor Kobayashi (Kunichi Nomura) – Atari’s father – bans them due to the dog flu. Thus begins the adventure of a lifetime that could not only affect Trash Island, but the prefecture of Megasaki City as a whole. This film, which also stars Ken Watanabe, Nijiro Murakami, and Akira Takayama, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. Wes Anderson is a take it or leave it director for most. I choose the latter, but I do give credit where credit is due: he is unafraid to cast ethnic Japanese actors for a Japanese story…which is more than I can say for most in Hollywood. Hi, Rupert Sanders.
I Feel Pretty (PG-13)
Metascore: 47
Amy Schumer plays Renee, a woman who is dealing with daily bouts of crippling insecurity and inadequacy. After she suffers an accident, she regains consciousness and believes she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the face of the earth. She then decides to live her life as fearlessly and flawlessly as possible, but how will she react when she realizes nothing has changed? This film, which also stars Emily Ratajkowski, Michelle Williams, and Rafe Spall, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. Regardless of how I feel about Amy Schumer, this has the feel of a pretty empowering movie. What’s the worst that could happen?
Rampage (PG-13)
Metascore: 45
Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) is a primatologist who has an unshakeable bond with a rare albino silverback gorilla named George. However, when a genetic experiment goes awry, it turns the normally gentle George into a giant rage filled gorilla. When it’s discovered this mutation has affected other creatures, it’s up to Okoye, George, and geneticist Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to find an antidote and save them all. This film, which also stars Malin Åckerman, Jake Lacey, and Jeffery Dean Morgan, is available in a two-disc 4k UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a single-disc Blu-ray 3D+ Digital HD version, and a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version. I have nothing against big, dumb action movies – it was basically a prerequisite for growing up in the ’80s, but I have no interest in this one.
Super Troopers 2 (R)
Metascore: 41
After a border dispute threatens relations between the U.S. and Canada, it’s up to the most inept group of cops this side of real life to put an end to the dispute. God help us all. This film, which stars Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Hefferman, and Lynda Carter, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. Listen…I got nothin’. Sorry.
The Expanse: Season Three
As the war between Earth and Mars escalates, the next phase in the evolution of the protomolecule threatens humanity on both sides. The crew of the Rocinante finds themselves in the crossfire of this deadly event, fighting battles from within and trying to save lives in the process. This series, which stars Thomas Jane, Dominique Tipper, and Shohreh Aghdashloo, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. This is a beloved franchise brought back from the brink thanks to its devoted fanbase, and it is certainly worth a watch.
That’s all I got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.
Also, I am still collecting donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Center. This is a very important cause to me, and if you’re able to contribute in any way, you can do so via this link. Please and thank you.
Until next time…
