BluTuesday - July 17th, 2012
Hello, everybody! Joseph here, and I’m here to give you the skinny on the new Bluray releases for July 17th. There were a lot of different ones to choose from, but I’m giving you what I think is the best. So, let’s not dawdle, shall we?
The Butterfly Effect (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 33%
This movie, released on January 23, 2004, came out when Ashton Kutcher was looking to leave his comedic roots behind and become a more serious actor. Alongside Amy Smart, they set out to release a psychological thriller that would make the viewer think. It was a critical bomb, but it got good enough buzz to spend a solid month in the top five, debuting at #1. If you’re a fan of mind-bending thrillers, you could certainly do worse.
Cellular (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 54%
This movie came to theaters on September 10, 2004, and it proved to be an entertaining little thriller, if not mostly ignored. Starring Chris Evans and Kim Basinger - with supporting roles by Jason Statham, Jessica Biel, and William H. Macy, it proves that a wrong number may actually prove to make you a hero. Not bloody likely, but it’s possible. The movie only spent two weeks in the top five, with its highest being at #2; it careened out shortly thereafter. It was incredibly fun to watch, though; I recommend it.
Just Cause (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 22%
Here’s a relatively old one…back on February 17, 1995, this one came out in the theaters. Starring Sean Connery, Blair Underwood, Kate Capshaw, and Laurence Fishburne, it tells the tale of a lawyer trying to save the life of an educated Black man convicted of raping and murdering a white girl. There are quite a few twists in this movie, and the end is a bit surprising for its time. It spent a month in the top five with two weeks at #2, and two weeks at #4. The movie felt disjointed, and it left me wanting, but I suppose it could’ve been worse.
Intruders (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 33%
This movie was one of those where if you blinked, you missed it. Released on March 30, 2012, this movie, starring Clive Owen, is about two families; a Spanish mother trying to save her son from a faceless stranger, and a British woman who is having nightmares about a demon who may or may not threaten her family. This movie spent a whopping two weeks in the theaters, and it didn’t even pretend to sniff the top five. Let’s put it this way: the total gross of this film ($69,136) would buy you a run-down house. If you like Clive Owen, you may like this; otherwise, it may be smart to avoid this one at all costs.

How much Statham is actually in Cellular. Because I’ll
drool overwatch him all.day.long.I saw Cellular and don’t remember him in it… which is weird because I tend to pay attention to whatever Statham is in.
If memory serves, he’s not in it a whole lot, but he does pop his bald head in the frame from time to time. I may have to go back and watch it again; I remember liking it, but I don’t remember a whole lot from it.
I never saw Intruders! I’m going to have to check that out this weekend I think. And I loved The Butterfly Effect when it came out, still is one of my all time favorite movies.
I’m actually surprised at how much I liked The Butterfly Effect. If I watch The Intruders, though, there’s a good chance one of my cats will end up pepper sprayed in the middle of the night.
The Butterfly Effect is fantastic. Truly, without any qualifiers, it’s a great concept and is executed very well. I’d almost compare it to Donnie Darko, in that sense. Not as good, of course, but still very good.
Cellular is in the same kind of vein of Phonebooth, focusing on the idea that we’re all becoming connected by our phones. Pulse is another movie that uses this sort of idea. I like all three of those movies (Cellular, Phonebooth, and Pulse).
I haven’t seen Just Cause or The Intruders. Well, I may have seen Just Cause, but I’ve completely forgotten it, so I might as well have never seen it.
It’s probably for the best that you don’t remember Just Cause. It wasn’t realized properly, and that kinda fudged the movie all up. Intruders may work if you like horror movies, which this is.
I may give The Intruders a look-see.

If memory serves statham is the bad guy in Cellular and only has a handful of scenes towards the end
What is wrong you you people? Statham is the main bad guy in Cellular!
You really should pay better attention to your ridiculous early 00s thrillers.
