What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from geeking out over season two trailer for Star Trek: Discovery to bring you the latest releases to home media for July 24, 2018. In this week’s episode, we discuss an indecipherable thriller, jumping into the game, and a fantastic start to a series. Let’s get to it.

Dark Crimes (R)
Metascore: 24

Jim Carrey plays Tadek, a police detective hot on the trail of the murder of a businessman. When he realizes the crime is eerily similar to a crime outlined by author Krystov Kozlov (Marton Csokas), he finds himself drawn into a web of lies, deceit, and murder that threatens to bring him to the edge…and beyond. This film, which also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Agata Kulesza, and Kati Outinen, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. Look, I’m gonna be honest here: I had never heard of this film until today, and it just seems utterly dreadful. The only reason I included it was because I wanted to hit my three-film minimum. So…yeah.

Ready Player One (PG-13)
Metascore: 64

In the year 2045, humanity is at its lowest point. Living in slums and struggling to struggle to make ends meet, everyone finds their solace in the virtual reality world of the OASIS. When OASIS’ creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance) dies, he leaves his entire fortune and ownership of the OASIS to whoever can find the Easter Egg he hid deep within. We follow Wade Watts, aka Parzival (Tye Sheridan) as he and his friends search for the hidden mystery that could change the course of the OASIS – and the world – forever. This film, which also stars Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelssohn, and Lena Waithe, is available in a tw0 disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a single disc 3D Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version, and a single disc DVD version. I was ambivalent about this movie when I first heard of it; it seemed like schmaltzy nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. But, when I watched it, I really enjoyed it! It’s a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it.

Counterpart: The Complete First Season
Metascore: 76

Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons) is a low-level employee in a Berlin-based spy agency who inadvertently stumbles upon a portal to a parallel dimension. He goes through on a whim and comes face to face with…himself (J.K. Simmons). Exploring themes of identity, lost love, and fate, this show dares to ask the philosophical question “what if things could have been different?” This series, which also stars Olivia Williams, Harry Lloyd, and Nazanin Boniadi, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This is a fantastic show that is definitely worth watching. Check it out.
