Greetings!  Joseph here to hit you with the good stuff like I’m Jacob from Mass Effect 2.  Yep; it’s the weekly picks of BluRay releases.  These four movies may be worth your while; either that, or they’re good to make fun of.  At any rate, they’re here for your perusal.  Enjoy!

The Last Days of Disco (R)

On May 29, 1998, this satirical dramedy starring Chloë Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale was released to theaters.  Set in the 1980s, it focused on Manhattanites and Ivy League grads going in and out of the disco phase.  Of course, that’s not the only thing this movie came in and out of; it didn’t even crack the Top 5.  It’s total gross was a hair over $3 million, with a budget of $8 million.  In its defense, it only opened in  22 theaters; kinda hard to turn a profit when the max amount of theaters it opened in is lower than the number of screens in a modern cineplex.  However, it looks like it may be interesting, so it may be worth your while to give it a go.

This movie opened on April 16, 1999 to a tremendous amount of fanfare.  Martin Lawrence!  Eddie Murphy!  What could go wrong?  Well, you get to see a comedy that forgot to be funny.  Sure, it had its moments, but it was a pretty dreary film overall.  I’ll give credit where credit is due, though; the makeup they did for Lawrence and Murphy was top-notch, earning them an Oscar nomination for their work.  Despite my misgivings for the movie, it stayed in the Top 5 for a month, topping out at #1.  Unfortunately, it fell about $16 million shy of its $80 million budget, but it didn’t do too bad for a movie that had to have been a marketing nightmare.

The Deep Blue Sea (R)

This movie - released on September 11, 2011 in Toronto, November 25, 2011 in the UK, and on March 23, 2012 in the US - is the epitome of an art-house film.  The movie - Bbased on the play of the same name,   it- stars Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston as star-crossed lovers.  This is one of those that isn’t expected to really do much due to the limited release, and it shows.  It’s made a bit more money every week, but it struggled to hit the million dollar mark.  However, if you like art-house films, this is for you.  Plus, it has Tom Hiddleston in it, so you get to see what he’s done besides play Loki in The Avengers.

Mystery Men (PG)

Released on July 30, 1999, this movie - based on a comic book titled Flaming Carrot Comics - is an ensemble piece led by Ben Stiller and Hank Azaria.  The movie centers around a group of guys who are trying to make their name as superheroes.  While entertaining, it seemed to try far too hard, and ended up flopping pretty royally.  Also, I think this was around the time where people were really beginning to get sick of Ben Stiller.  The movie had a disappointing opening, only getting as high as #6.  In fact, it came nowhere near its $68 million budget.  It’s revered as a cult classic now, so it can’t hurt to give it a go.
