BluTuesday - July 9, 2013
Hey, y’all! Joseph here, and I’m bringing you the newest home releases for July 9, 2013. In this week’s episode, we’ll talk about another Stephenie Meyer movie adaptation, one of SyFy’s best, a spinoff to a new animated classic, and some iconic crazy claws. All strapped in? Well, let’s blast off!
The Host (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 9%
From Stephenie Meyer, the creator of the worldwide phenomenon The Twilight Saga, comes this daring and romantic thriller based on The New York Times #1 bestselling novel. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over humans’ bodies and erasing their minds, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) risks everything to protect the people she cares about most, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world. The Host is a passionate and powerful epic love story co-starring Diane Kruger, Jake Abel, Frances Fisher, Max Irons and William Hurt. This movie comes in both a two disc Bluray/DVD/Digital Copy/Ultraviolet version and a single disc DVD version. I’ve never read anything Stephenie Meyer has ever written, nor have I seen any motion picture adaptation, so far be it from me to criticize. But, if it’s your thing…have at it.
Prepare for more paranormal thrills, chills and excitement as Warehouse 13 returns with more action-packed mysteries than ever before! After the destruction of the Warehouse, the agents risk the use of a mythical artifact in an attempt to restore all they’ve lost. But the use of this dangerous artifact could change the Warehouse team and the world forever. Featuring guest appearances by Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Sam Huntington (Being Human) and other sci-fi favorites, this five-disc set includes all 20 Season Four episodes plus a cache of classified bonus content including a never-before-seen chapter of the animated web series Grand Designs. This is a fun show to watch, and if it were coming out any other week, this would be my pick of the week. Alas, it’s not meant to be, but it’s a solid number two.
The Legend of Korra – Book One: Air
From the creators of the Award-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender, comes a new TV series that continues the exciting adventures of element bending. When Avatar Aang passes, he is reincarnated as a girl named Korra, from the Southern Water Tribe. Against the wishes of her guardians, Korra leaves the safety of her home to travel to Republic City. Before long, Korra’s Avatar skills are put to the test when she encounters a group of Chi-blockers led by a masked man named Amon. With his Equalists followers, Amon plots to gain control over Republic City and ultimately rid the world of the “impurity” of bending. Korra and her friends will stop at nothing to capture him, leading to an Avatar adventure like nothing before in Legend of Korra: Book One: Air! This series comes in both a two disc Bluray set and a two disc DVD set. This, folks, is my pick of the week.
Marvel Knights: Wolverine, Origin
Wolverine is the best there is at what he does – although of course, what he does isn’t very nice. But long before he was a member of the X-Men, a tormented experiment of the Weapon X project, or even a savage bar brawler known as Logan, he was simply a young boy. What incredible forces created this man, the world’s greatest killing machine? For years, Wolverine has searched desperately for answers from his past, from the wilds of the Canadian wilderness to the teeming cities of Japan and beyond. And despite his perseverance and longing for the truth, he remains an enigma to himself and those around him. But, in this landmark event, Marvel reveals all: The birth and childhood of young James Howlett…the intriguing secrets of his family history…and the tragedy that changed everything. Welcome to the greatest story never told. This is only available on a single disc DVD, but it’s something that will be readily available for the release of The Wolverine. So, if you want to refresh your memory on how Wolverine got his start, well here you go.
