What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from the sweltering heat to bring you the latest in home media for June 17, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss more Wes Anderson quirk, a movie that’s pretty awesome, the seedy underbelly of politics, and a show who’s bark is just as bad as its bite. Let’s not sit on pretense any further, folks; let’s get to it.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%
Wes Anderson brings us along for a journey to a mystical place called the Grand Budapest Hotel in 1932, and we’re introduced to Monsieur Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes), a concierge who is so beloved by everyone at the hotel that he is essentially the man in charge. He meets up with a young man named Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), and they embark on an adventure of their own, even as the fictional country of Zubrowka is on the verge of war. Also starring Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, and Léa Seydoux, this movie is available in both a single-disc Blu-ray + Digital copy version and a single-disc DVD version. I can’t bring myself to watch Wes Anderson movies anymore, because I find them to be too precious for their own good, but your mileage may vary.
The LEGO Movie
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 96%
The LEGO Movie centers around Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt - who we’ll be seeing in Guardians of the Galaxy in a couple of months), an average man looking for adventure. He finds it in the form of Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), someone known as a “Master Builder” and she has come to Emmet on a mission from God - er, Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman) to tell him that he is the one to save the world from the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell). Also starring the voices of Will Arnett as Batman, Channing Tatum as Superman, Jonah Hill as Green Lantern, Cobie Smulders as Wonder Woman, and a host of others, this movie is available in a three-disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version with a 3D poster of Emmet and a Vitruvius minifigure, a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a two disc DVD + Digital Copy version. Everything is awesome in this movie, and it is my pick of the week.
Kevin Spacey returns as Francis Underwood in this deliciously spectacular take on DC politics. With the obstacles he faced in Season One out of the way, there seems to be nothing to stop him and his ambitious wife Claire (Robin Wright) from ascending to the highest position in the land: the President of the United States. Also starring Michael Kelly, Kate Mara, and Molly Parker, this Netflix original is available in a four-disc Blu-ray version and a four-disc DVD version. This show is so smart it’s scary, and I can’t recommend this any higher.
The story of Alpha werewolf Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) continues in the second part of this MTV show. After dealing with an Alpha pack of werewolves earlier in the season, they now face their greatest challenge: a group of demons known only as Oni. They’re out to exact revenge on all of the supernatural beings in Beacon Hills, and won’t stop at anything to ensure that revenge is carried out. The series, which also stars Crystal Reed, Dylan O’Brien, and Tyler Hoechlin, is only available in a three-disc DVD version. This show seems like a good time, so give it a go.
