What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from housesitting to bring you the latest releases to home media for June 23, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss an awkward love story, a criminal doing the infamous one last job, a spy who’s been done wrong, and solving crimes in Victorian times. Ready to get started? Let’s get to it.
If There Be Thorns (PG)

You can’t always escape your past, no matter how hard you try. Christopher and Cathy have left Foxworth Hall and moved to California with Cathy’s two children. But, when Connie follows them and moves in right next door to them, secrets are revealed that are better left buried. This film, which stars Heather Graham, Rachel Carpani, and Jason Lewis, is available in a single disc DVD + Digital Copy version. I never cared for V.C. Andrews’ original book series, because I found the subject matter extremely creepy. I know my limits, and I know that I won’t be watching this, either.
The Forger (R)

When the world’s best art forger (John Travolta) arranges his release from prison by making a deal with a crime syndicate, he realizes that his services are required for one last heist. To that end, he calls on the two people he knows he can trust; his father (Christopher Plummer) and his ailing son (Tye Sheridan). This film, which also stars Jennifer Ehle, Abigail Spencer, and Anson Mount, is available in both a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This seems like an interesting concept, and the fact that it’s coming straight to home media shouldn’t dissuade you from watching it. I’m not gonna highly recommend it, but if it’s a Redbox night? Go for it.
Survivor (PG-13)

Milla Jovovich plays a Foreign Service Officer who gets posted to the American Embassy in London. Her job is to stop foreign terrorists from getting into the U.S. When the Embassy falls under attack, she finds herself framed for the attack, and she has to evade the law while also looking for a criminal mastermind only known as the Watchmaker (Pierce Brosnan). This film, which also stars Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett, and Robert Forster, is available in both a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. Remember what I said about The Forger? Make that double for this one. This is almost my pick of the week, but that’s mostly because I enjoy a good spy thriller every now and then. So, this is one that I recommend highly.
Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfayden) is on a mission. He’s trying to clean up the town of Whitechapel, and he has to go deep into underground London to do so. He’s not doing it alone, though; he has Detective Inspector Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn), Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg), and Long Susan (Myanna Buring). Together, they seek to bring the law to the lawless. This series, which also stars David Wilmot, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This is exquisitely shot and well acted, and the story is spectacular. This gets my pick of the week, and I highly recommend it.
