BluTuesday - June 27, 2017

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from packing for GuardianCon this weekend to bring you the latest releases to home media for June 27, 2017. In this week’s episode, we discuss science gone wrong, policing gone awry, teenagers with attitude, and a sequel over two decades in the making. Let’s get to work.

Life (R) - NOTE: This film was released to home media on June 20, 2017
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 67%

Six crewmembers onboard the International Space Station find out that there is indeed life on Mars. However, when they bring it onboard to study, they discover that the lifeforms is more intelligent and more dangerous than they could have ever imagined. This film, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and Hiroyuki Sanada, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. So, uh…yeah. To paraphrase Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park, these scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could investigate what they found that they didn’t stop to think if they should.

CHiPs (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 16%

Jon Baker (Dax Shepard) is a washed out pro motorbiker who’s trying to put his life and marriage back together. Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Michael Peña) is a Federal agent going undercover to investigate the California Highway Patrol. Together, these two have to get to the bottom of the corruption and save the day…if they don’t kill each other first. This film, which also stars Adam Brody, Jessica McNamee, and Kristen Bell, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Eh…it’s a comedy, and not a great one. I liked Peña in Ant-Man and Dax Shepard seems like a nice enough guy, but I don’t know if this was a project that really needed to be made.

Saban’s Power Rangers (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 46%

When ancient evil Rita Repulsa (Rita Repulsa) returns to take over the world, five teenagers - Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Billy (R.J. Cyler), Trini (Becky G.), and Zack (Ludi Lin) must become the heroic Power Rangers and save their Krispy Kreme - and the rest of the world - from Rita’s evil schemes. This film, which also stars Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, and Caroline Cave, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. So, here’s the thing: this movie has the first instance of both an LGBTQ and autistic superhero in both Trini and Billy, and the teenage drama is top notch. However, the movie as a whole is only partly entertaining. I mean, you can check it out if you’re a fan of the franchise as a whole; what’s the worst that could happen?

T2 Trainspotting (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 78%

Twenty years after the events of the original Trainspotting film, the gang reunites to get into more trouble. Mark (Ewan McGregor), Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) get together and explore a myriad of emotions while on a drug-fueled bender of self-exploration. This film, which also stars Kelly MacDonald, Shirley Henderson, and Steven Robertson, is available in a  two disc $k UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. I don’t know what to say about this movie; the first one wasn’t my sort of film, and this one was even less so. But, if you’re a big black comedy fan, this is for you.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below. And, if you happen to be in Tampa this weekend and you see me around, say hi!

Until next time…
