BluTuesday - May 19, 2015

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from catching up on Game of Thrones (I’m still in Season 1, because life) to bring you the latest releases to home media for May 19, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss ‘Murica, a sequel no one asked for, a visit to lock-up, a tale as old as time, and the end of a beloved icon. All set? Let’s get to it.

American Sniper

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 73%

Based on the real life story of Chief Special Warfare Officer Chris Kyle, this film tells the story of how Kyle (Bradley Cooper) became the most decorated sniper in American history, earning him the nickname “Legend;” it also focuses on the struggles he has acclimating to civilian life when his service is done. This film, which also stars Sienna Miller, Luke Grimes, and Kyle Gallner, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a two disc DVD + Digital Copy version. This is a stellar movie with a stellar cast, and the Navy vet in me can’t help but give it my pick of the week.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 14%

Five years after the first film takes place, the Lou (Rob Corddry), Nick (Craig Robinson), and Jacob are millionaires beyond belief. However, when an assassin from the future comes and kills Lou, it’s up to these three knuckleheads to travel to the future and find who did it and why. This film, which also stars Adam Scott, Chevy Chase, and Gillian Jacobs, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. The first film was a surprise hit that delighted audiences the world over. This one? Not so much. Run - don’t walk - away from it.

Orange is the New Black: The Complete Second Season

The adventures of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schiling) in lock-up continue in season two of this acclaimed Netflix original. From a trial to a whole host of new inmates, Piper learns that her time at Litchfield will be anything but easy. This series, which also stars Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon, and Natasha Lyonne, is avaiable in both a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. This is a great show and it’s something that has been loved the world over. Go give this a look.

Beauty and the Beast: The Second Season

Following the events of season one, fate seems to have hit the reset button on Vincent (Jay Ryan) and Catherine’s (Kristin Kreuk) relationship. He returns to his love, but he is incredibly different than what she remembered. So, with a little help from her friends, Cat sets forth to regain the man she loves. This series, which also stars Nina Lisandrello, Austin Bass, and Sendhil Ramamurthy, is available in a six disc DVD version. This retelling is great for the romantics at heart. For those of us who only have memories of the 1991 Disney classic, not so much. But, give it a shot.

Glee: The Complete Sixth Season

As we prepare to say farewell to this beloved series, we get to see the future of the program. Rachel (Lea Michele) comes back with Kurt (Chris Colfer) in tow to save the glee club from being razed by Principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch). This series, which also stars Kevin McHale, Matthew Morrison, and Amber Riley, is available in a four disc DVD version. This was a beloved series that is ending when its time has come, and there’s no better way to say farewell than this.

Well, that’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
