What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from lots of computer pickups to bring you the latest releases to home media for May 24, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss the dating life, one of the Coast Guard’s greatest hits, and male models. We have a few titles to get to, so let’s get started.
How to Be Single (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 49%
Dakota Johnson plays Alice, a young woman in New York City who’s constantly striking out when it comes to matters of the heart. Along with her boisterous friend Robin (Rebel Wilson), they navigate matters of the heart and try to figure out whether or not it’s worth it to be single. This film, which also stars Damon Wayans, Jr., Leslie Mann, and Anders Holm, is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. I’m not big on romcoms anymore, and I have issues with how they portray the city as a whole, but if romcoms are your thing, then have at it.
The Finest Hours (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 63%
In 1952, a winter storm hits off the coast of Cape Cod and decimates an oil tanker, leaving 30 sailors trapped in the stern of the ship. Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) grabs a small crew and sets sail in a 12 seat boat to save the day, or die trying. This film, which also stars Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, and Eric Bana, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This film is inspired by true events, and it goes to show the great heroism of the United States Coast Guard. Filled with gripping cinematography and effects that will take your breath away, I give this film my pick of the week.
Zoolander No. 2: The Magnum Edition (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 24%
Derek (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) are back to rip the runway in this sequel to the surprise hit of 2001. The two former rivals are now partners on the modeling scene and are enjoying their successes. But, when Mugatu (Will Ferrell) threatens to take them down, they’ll have to use all of their wit to save the day. This film, which also stars Penelope Cruz, the Gloriously British Benedict Cumberbatch (Patent Pending), and Kristin Wiig, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. Had this movie happened a decade ago, I’d be all over it. But, as it stands, this is a sequel that’s a bit too late and too unfunny for its own good.
