What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from recovering from the long weekend to bring you the latest releases to home media for May 31, 2016. In this week’s episode, we discuss blasphemy, Jane Austin wishing she were that dark, Jesse Owens, and crooked cops. We’ve got quite a few movies to discuss here, so let’s get to it.
Gods of Egypt (PG-13)

In ancient Egypt, mortal “Egyptian” hero Bek (Brenton Thwaites) has to team up with “Egyptian” god Horus (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau) in order to save the woman he loves and the world from “Egyptian” god Set (Gerard Butler) and his armies of darkness. This film, which also stars Geoffrey Rush, Chadwick Boseman, and Elodie Yung, is available in a three disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. Normally, I would have some sort of snarky comment at the ready to close out this paragraph, but the fact that this is a movie that someone felt had the need to exist is disheartening and utterly ridiculous. But…someone may want to watch this, so that’s why it’s in this article.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (PG-13)

In a stylized version of 19th century England, Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a working-class master of martial arts and weaponry. When a highly cultured zombie apocalypse takes place, she must team up with the high-class, hoity-toity zombie killer Mr. Darcy (Sam Reilly) to both save the day and fall in love. This film, which also stars Lena Heady, Jack Huston, and Matt Smith, is available in a two disc 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a single disc Blu-ray version, and a single disc DVD version. You know the story of Pride and Prejudice, nothing really changes from that…well, nothing besides the zombie killing. But, with a title like that, what do you expect? Give it a watch.
Race (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 61%
Inspired by true events, this film discusses Jesse Owens (Stephan James) as he makes his way from humble beginnings in racially segregated Cleveland, OH to the world stage at the 1936 Olympics. Jason Sudekis also stars as Ohio State University track coach Larry Snyder, who sees potential in the young man, and he and Owens join forces to battle racism and political pressure at home and abroad. This film, which also stars Jeremy Irons, Eli Goree, and Carice van Houten, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This was a very important time in not only American history, but world history. It’s a very poignant film, and it’s my pick of the week.
Triple 9 (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 53%
When faced with blackmail from the Russian mob, a group of corrupt cops decide to set up a rookie cop for a 999, which is police code for “officer down.” However, when the rookie cop catches wind of this plot and thwarts it, this sets the stage for double crosses, more double crosses and revenge. This film, which stars Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Anthony Mackie, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. I’m always in for a good cop thriller, and this one is no exception. Although I do have some quibbles with where the bulk of the bad stuff happens, I think this is a decent movie overall. Give it a watch.
