What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from prepping for Veteran’s Day to bring you the newest releases to home media for November 10, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss rock ’em sock ’em robots, a raunchy love story, Face/Off taken to its logical conclusion, and a prequel to one of the biggest breakout characters ever. Ready to get started? Let’s get started.
Terminator: Genisys (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 25%
In the distant future, John Connor (Jason Clarke) sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) to the past to protect his mother Sarah (Emilia Clarke). That’s the story you know. But, when Kyle makes it to the past, he finds that Sarah is a badass, and she’s trained a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to be her protector. Their nemesis? A T-1000 (Byung-hun Lee) and an unforeseen baddie that will make your jaw drop. This film, which also stars J.K. Simmons, Courtney B. Vance, and Matt Smith, is available in a three disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. This movie was a mess. It didn’t quite know what it wanted to do, and it ended up doing nothing in the end. If you’re a die-hard Terminator fan who just has to digest everything this universe has to offer, then this is for you. Otherwise, you’re better off letting it come to Netflix.
Trainwreck (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 85%
Amy (Amy Schumer) doesn’t believe in monogamy; she learned at the feet of her father that monogamy wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. She spends her days either buried in her work as a magazine writer or buried in her bed with some strange. But, when she begin to falls for a handsome and successful sports doctor (Bill Hader), she begins to think that monogamy may not be so bad after all. This film, which also stars Colin Quinn, Brie Larson, and LeBron James (!), is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This film is actually quite quaint, and it’s a pretty solid date night movie.
Self/less (PG-13)
Rotten Tomaotes rating: 21%
Damian (Ben Kingsley) is a genius the world over, but he’s running into a problem; he’s not smarter than father time. So, when he’s on the verge of death, he discovers a place that will transplant his consciousness into a younger body. He agrees and wakes up in the body of Ryan Reynolds, which isn’t bad. But, when he starts experiencing memories that he shouldn’t have, he starts to see that immortality has a price. This film, which also stars Natalie Martinez, Matthew Goode, and Derek Luke, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie could have been great, because the premise is amazing! Instead, it became a huddled mass of stupid. Don’t watch this unless it’s on Crackle.
Better Call Saul: The Complete First Season
Before he became Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), Walter White’s unbelievably crooked lawyer, he was Jimmy McGill, a small time attorney trying to scrape by and make a name for himself. Along with his partner in crime Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a former Philly cop turned Albuquerque PI, they have to utilize Mike’s status as a fixer to protect his sketchy clientele. This series, which also stars Rhea Seehorn, Michael Mando, and Michael McKean, is available in a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. This is the rarity in entertainment: a prequel that is actually good. This is a dynamite cast with a great story, and this is my pick of the week.
Well, that’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Please feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.
Until next time…
