What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from lamenting the dumpster fires that are my fantasy football teams to bring you the latest releases to home media for October 13, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss strippers, a prequel sequel of a horror movie, a revenge thriller, and a spooky new season of one of the best shows on television. Everybody ready? Let’s get it in.
Magic Mike XXL (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 62%
Three years after the events of Magic Mike, the eponymous Mike (Channing Tatum) is out of the game, having left on top. The rest of the “Kings of Tampa” want to follow suit, but they want to do it in an all-out party on Myrtle Beach. Once Mike signs up, everyone hops onboard the party bus, with stops along the way to learn some new things and make some new friends. This film, which also stars Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, and Jada Pinkett Smith, is available in a single disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. The first Magic Mike was a tour de force, and it showed that the Charming Potato actually could act. The sequel, which is more along the lines of what Tatum thought the first one was gonna be, well…the sequel was a bit slapdash. But, if you liked the first one, you’ll be good with this one, too. After all, who am I to stop you from getting your Stella on?
Insidious: Chapter 3 (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 59%
The third chapter in the Insidious franchise takes place before the events of the Lambert family haunting. It focuses on Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) as she tries to help Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott), a teenage girl who’s being haunted by some sort of supernatural spirit…as you do. This film, which also stars Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell, and Dermot Mulroney, is available in both a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. You already know how I feel about horror movies; I explained why last week. It would have to be something incredible for me to watch one, and this one isn’t enough.
Dark Places (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 26%
Twenty-five years ago, Libby Day’s mother and two sisters were murdered, and her brother Ben (Tye Sheridan) was framed for their murder. However, when Libby (Charlize Theron) uncovers evidence that proves her brother is innocent - and the killer is still at large, she goes to the ends of the earth to find the murderer and either bring him to justice or bring him to the undertaker. This film, which also stars Nicholas Hoult, Corey Stoll, and Chloe Grace Moretz, is available in both a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is Gillian Flynn’s follow-up to her smash hit Gone Girl, but it’s not as captivating as the first film. It’s still worth watching, though.
Penny Dreadful: The Complete Second Season
Season Two of this smash hit sees Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) strengthening their bond along with the rest of their group as they unite to fight the forces of evil. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper) are fighting demons of their own. This series, which also stars Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway, and Danny Sapani, is available in both a three disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This show’s opening season was one of the best things going, and the second season showed no signs of slowing down. It’s sexy, it’s spooky, it’s funny, and it’s my pick of the week.
Well, that’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Please feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.
Until next time…
