Hey, ProFans! I’m taking a break from licking my wounds from my latest recap for Sailor Moon Crystal (mea culpa, fellow Moonies) to bring you the latest in new releases for home media for October 21, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss a big train, a tape that no one wants to see, a sequel to an unexpected smash hit, and Don Draper. All comfy and ready to rock? Let’s get to it.
Snowpiercer (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%
South Korean director Bong Joon-ho brings the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige to the big screen and he does so with a bang! The world has been rendered almost useless after an experiment to battle global warming has disastrous results, killing nearly everyone on earth. The survivors live in a train that circumnavigates the globe via a perpetual-motion engine, and they do so via a class system: the rich live up front, and the poor live in the back. Curtis Everett (Chris Evans) looks to change that, and he does so by sparking a revolution that threatens to change the lives of everyone onboard. This film, which co-stars Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, and Ed Harris, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a two-disc DVD + Digital Copy version. I have been fascinated with this movie from the moment I heard of its existence. This movie is on the top of my to-watch list, and it should be on yours as well.
Sex Tape (R)

And, now…we have the banal. Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz star as a married couple who’s lost a bit of the spice in their relationship. So, what do they do to spruce things up? They make a sex tape. If The Fappening has taught us anything, doing something like that - especially on an Apple product - can only go horribly wrong, and it does here as well; their tape is uploaded to the cloud and it’s being shared to everyone that’s received an iPad from them. This Apple commercial disguised as a film, which also stars Rob Corddry, Rob Lowe, and Jack Black, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD + Digital Copy version. Don’t watch this. Please. I beg of you. There are few things in the world that are unfunny, and this happens to be one of them. Avoid it like the plague.
The Purge: Anarchy (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 57%
Frank Grillo stars as Sergeant Leo Barnes, a police officer looking to use the Annual Purge to exact revenge on a man who wronged him. Along the way, he runs into people who need his help. He helps them, and meets up with an Anti-Purge Resistance Group; the reason for this group is self-explanatory. This sets forth a chain of events that threatens not only the purge, but the entire country at large. This film, which also stars Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, and Michael K. Williams, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single-disc DVD + Digital Copy version. Frank Grillo continues his run of action films that got a lot of notice in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and it continues here. This is worth a watch.
Mad Men: the Final Season, Part 1
Don Draper is back, and he’s pulling a Harry Potter by having his series finale divided in two parts. This season continues the greatness that has been Don Draper and his escapades on Madison Avenue, his struggles at home, and his love of a good drink. This season is available in both a two-disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a three-disc DVD + Digital Copy version. This show has been great from episode one, and I can’t recommend it any higher than that. Plus, it’s got my pick of the week going for it, which is nice.
