What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from playing WAY too much Destiny (lies; there is no such thing as too much Destiny) to bring you the latest releases to home media for September 22, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss family, the first of Disney’s ode to princesses, and a plethora of TV releases. Ready to get started? Let’s get to it, then.
Furious 7 (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%
The gang’s all here in this ever expanding franchise that finally decided to close a serious loophole. When Han (Sung Kang) is killed in the middle of Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift/Furious 6, the team suspects that someone is out to kill everyone in the family. When Dom’s (Vin Diesel) house is destroyed in a bombing, the suspicion becomes fact. They team up with a mysterious agent known as Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) to take out Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), a bad man with revenge on his mind. Trust me, it’s not as convoluted as it sounds. This film, which also stars Paul Walker, Djimon Hounsou, and Nathalie Emmanuel, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. We all know this is the last film of Paul Walker, and the send-off they gave him was so touching and beautiful, that it almost feels like it belongs in a completely different movie. This was a great movie for F&F fans, and I highly recommend it for everyone. Besides, it’s Tyrese’s best role to date, and that’s saying something.
Cinderella (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 85%
Cinderella tells the story of Ella (Lily James), a young woman who lives as her deceased mother would’ve wanted: she treats everyone with kindness and lives a life of courage. She needs both of these things, because her father’s marriage to Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchette) is nothing short of evil. Ella undergoes merciless teasing from not only her stepmother, but her stepsisters as well. Oh, come on, y’all know this story. Fairy godmother, talking mice, Prince Charming, yadda yadda. This film, which also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Stellan Skarsgard, and Richard Madden, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie is another fork in the new Disney Renaissance: turning all of their animated hits into live action hits. Maleficent started the trend, and it only gets longer and wider from here. I’m just looking forward to the live action version of The Lion King, and don’t tell me they don’t have that in the pipeline; there’s a live action version of The Jungle Book in the works!
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Complete Second Season
After the events of the first season, where do the ragtag eponymous agents go from here? Well, they go up. Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) leads his team - Melina May (Ming Na Wen), Skye (Chloe Bennet), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Antoine Triplett (B.J. Britt) against Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond) and HYDRA. Things then take a turn for the Inhuman, and they get wilder and wilder from there. This series, which also stars Adrianne Palicki, Henry Simmons, and Nick Blood, is available in both a five disc Blu-ray version and a five disc DVD set. I’ve never hidden my love for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this series is no exception to the rule. I was hooked from the very first episode up to now, and I eagerly anticipate season three. This is one half of my pick of the week, because the other half is…
Marvel’s Agent Carter: The Complete First Season
Strategic Scientific Reserve Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) has it rough: she goes from being one of the heroes of World War II to being a coffee fetching, phone answering, lunch gathering lackey. But, when Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) comes to her asking him to help clear her name, Peggy, along with Howard’s butler Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy), goes off and becomes the badass we all know her to be. This series, which also stars Lyndsy Fonseca, Chad Michael Murray, and Shea Whigham, is available in both a single disc Blu-ray version and a single disc DVD version. As much as Robert Downey, Jr. is the king of the MCU, Hayley Atwell is the queen; everyone loves her performance as Agent Carter, and she brings such joy to the role. It’s almost as if this character was created especially for her. This series is the second half of my pick of the week, and I am anxiously awaiting season two.
As far as the rest of TV for this week goes, we have the following shows making their home media debut:
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Eighth Season
Sleepy Hollow: The Complete Second Season
Empire: The Complete First Season
Well, that’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Please feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.
Until next time…
