What’s up, ProFans? Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from watching the NFL to bring you the latest releases in home media for September 9, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss the return of The First Avenger, the TV show that got a great boost from said Avenger, Paul Walker, vampires, spies, and things that go bump in the night. All ready to go? Let’s go, then.
Captain America: The First Avenger (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

This is the movie that became the gold standard for all comic book movies. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, and along with Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), they are forced to fight a battle against an enemy they didn’t see coming. This movie - which also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, and Cobie Smulders - is available in a two disc 3D Bluray/Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a single disc Bluray + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. I absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end, and it is more of a political thriller than it is a comic book movie. As such, it is my half of my pick of the week.
Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 1 [Blu-ray]
Coulson lives! Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) is instructed by Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Samuel L. Jackson) to assemble a small team of operatives to help keep the world safe after the events of The Avengers. Coulson, along with Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), and Skye (Chloe Bennet), they travel the world in their souped-up jet fighting the good fight against those who would harness alien tech to do evil. This series is available in both a five disc Bluray version and a five disc DVD version. This series was much maligned by a lot of people, but I loved it. Yeah, there were some filler episodes in there, but it led to a big finale that was led by Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This packs one heck of a one-two punch, and it’s the second half of my pick of the week.
Brick Mansions [Blu-ray]

In this remake of the French film District 13, Paul Walker plays undercover cop Damien Collier as he teams up with ex-con Lino (David Belle) to rescue Lino’s girlfriend from the ruthless drug kingpin Tremaine (RZA). Along the way, they discover a threat that could signal the end of the eponymous Brick Mansions district of Detroit. This movie is available in both a single disc Bluray + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. This movie was something that would’ve been released straight to DVD were it not for the untimely death of Paul Walker. This is something that should’ve honestly never seen the light of day, and it’s something that you should not waste your money on under any circumstances. Go watch District 13 instead.
This mystical series returns for its fifth season as an attempted return to college life turns nasty for Elena and Caroline. Evil forces have found their way to their college, and they will stop at nothing to defeat them. This series, which stars Nina Dobrev, Zach Roering, and Ian Somerhalder, is available in both a nine disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a five disc DVD version. I’m sure my synopsis has done this show no favors, but from everything I’ve heard…it’s pretty good. It has to be at least a few thousand miles better than Twilight. Plus, it’s full of beautiful people who have names that defy spell check. So, give it a watch; you might actually like it.
Claire Danes and Damian Lewis return in this explosive series. Lives are changed in an instant when Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Manny Patinkin) try to find out who was behind the bombing of CIA headquarters, and they’re forced to seek out help from the one person they least expected: Brody (Damian Lewis). He’s given a shot at redemption, but even that comes at a cost. This series is available in a three disc Bluray version and a four disc DVD version. I don’t quite know what to say about this one: it had a great premise, but it appears to have fallen off the rails during the second season. But, people still like it, so who knows?
Carry on, my wayward son! Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are in over their heads, as they have a whole host of monsters from hell to fight. Along the way, the angel Castiel (Misha Collins) finds out he’s more human than he thought, and he has to figure out how to reopen the gates of Heaven before it’s too late and hell really ascends on earth. This series is available in both a four disc Bluray + DVD version and a six disc DVD version. I could never get into this show because I always see Jensen Ackles as Jason Teague from Smallville. But, it’s survived nine years, so it has to be doing something right. So, give it a watch!
