Breaking Bad Spinoff Better Call Saul Headed to Netflix After Initial AMC Run

We’ve known for quite a while that AMC’s hit series Breaking Bad would live on in the spinoff series Better Call Saul, and now we know that series will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps by landing on Netflix shortly after airing on AMC in 2014.

Breaking Bad, widely regarded as one of the greatest series in the history of television, might not have even made it past its first two seasons, had it not been for Netflix and the power of being able to discover a series at your own pace. “I think Netflix kept us on the air,” series creator Vince Gilligan flatly stated to Mashable earlier this year, and I’d tend to agree. As someone who shamefully did not watch Breaking Bad until the first four-and-a-half seasons had already aired on AMC, I can attest to the fact that I would have been stuck waiting for reruns and/or DVDs, if it hadn’t been for the availability of those seasons on Netflix. Of course, I marathoned the first four seasons over a stretch of approximately five days; watched the first half of season five on blu-ray; and the rest is history, as I was then able to watch the series’ final half-season in real-time.

With Better Call Saul, the series’ story continues with one of its most colorful characters: Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), the not-such-a-bad-guy crooked lawyer. The spinoff will serve as a prequel with a plot description provided by Netflix on Monday:

“Tells the story of mall-based super lawyer Saul Goodman in the years before he became Walter White’s attorney. From parking tickets to mass murder, from slip-and-fall to bond fraud, Saul handles it all.”

The series will also, reportedly, see cameos from other Breaking Bad characters like Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman (Bitch!), and it has great potential to tell the story behind what made Saul Goodman the guy you “Better call” for all of Albuquerque’s highest classed criminals.

Better Call Saul has a tentative premiere set for sometime in 3rd quarter 2014 (sometime between August and October) and, once its first season’s finale airs on AMC, it will be heading to Netflix (in the US, Latin America, and Europe) at some time shortly thereafter.
