CONversations With a Cosplayer: Morgan Hoffman

Hey folks, Matthew here with a new segment here on Project Fandom. On the heels of the convention season, we bring you CONversations With a Cosplayer! In our inaugural episode we interview the dashing and lovely Morgan Hoffman, a personal friend of mine and experienced cosplayer, having attended Kawaii-Kon here in Hawaii. She was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule of creating costumes and wowing convention crowds to answer a few questions.

When did you first start getting into Cosplay?

Morgan: In high school. We had an anime club, and with that anime club I got into anime, mangas, and cosplays.

What was your first cosplay?

Morgan: Buttercup from the Powerpuff girls! It was the first cosplay at Kawaii-Kon 2010, my first ever.

For those who are thinking about cosplay or just getting into it, would you recommend going all out for it?

Morgan: My suggestion is to just take it easy, do something you’re comfortable with, so that way you’re not overwhelmed.

One question that my boss had, Nina Perez, asked “your experiences as a woman cosplayer, have they always been positive?

Morgan: It’s a big confidence boost. But it’s also a big downer, based on some of the people. Negative experiences are like, not getting recognized for your cosplay, like my Little Sister cosplay. And the male feedback is a little drastic, some of it’s flattering, others it’s too much. But if you’re having fun, then it shouldn’t matter.

What are your thoughts on; “Cosplaying for your weight?”

Morgan: I believe in that you should do what you’re comfortable in and with, but you should have fun. But I understand cosplaying to what you look close to.
