Review: Doctor Who - New Adventures w/ the 10th Doctor #3

Previously in Doctor Who: New Adventures with the 10th Doctor #3

The story was predictable, but how well Tennant’s Doctor is captured really saves the issue.

Everything about this story was predictable: one race weaponized a race with psychic abilities, said psychics turned on their creators and now they’re running roughshod on another planet, threatening to destroy it. Since they feed on negative energy and fear, the only way to stop them is to blast them with a massive amount of The Feels. Thankfully, Gabby’s neighborhood has all gathered in a cemetery for a Day of the Dead celebration. One might think that’s the last place you’d find good feelings, but everyone is singing and the day is saved.

The best part of the issue is how well, again, the writers are able to perfectly capture the personality of Tennant’s 10th Doctor. Reading the panels with him feels like watching the show in your head.

So far, each issue of the 11th’s comics has hinted at an underlying bigger arc involving SERVEYOU Inc. Here, I began to wonder if the 10th’s series would be a bunch of standalone adventures - the TV equivalent being monster-of-the-week episodes with no long-lasting significance. That was until Gabby makes an offhand remark after The Doctor refuses to take her with him as a companion: “No song should end too soon.” Suddenly, the Doctor offers to take Gabby for one trip. We all know how that turns out.

Hopefully, their next adventure will offer some substance.

Score | 6/10+ The Doctor quickly clarifies that when he says he likes Gabby, he means as a human. The Doctor is fond of humans. He doesn’t need anymore crushing companions, thank you very much.

- Gabby’s family, at the end, were so stereotypical and didn’t feel like a real family. Her father’s change of heart seemed a little too neat and convenient.

+ We know The Doctor, at this point his story, was into traveling alone so as to avoid hurting anyone else. It was cool to see him tell Gabby no.  At first.
