Review: Doctor Who – New Adventures w/ the 10th Doctor #7
I hate to play favorites, but it looks like the 10th Doctor’s adventures are my favorite of this new Doctor Who series of comics.
This new arc is fantastic. The Doctor and Gabby are in WWI Belgium, the TARDIS is missing, and soldiers have confiscated the sonic screwdriver because they think it’s a weapon and that the Doctor and Gabby are spies. They become even more suspicious when the Doctor seems to know a helluva lot about The Weeping Angels outside their door.
Oh, did I forget to mention The Weeping Angels are there, snatching up soldiers and sending them back in time? Because they are.
I mentioned in my review for the previous issue that The Weeping Angels are my favorite Doctor Who baddies. The idea of being sucked out of your time and tossed into the past terrifies me. Here, it’s even sadder as we watch the soldiers being dropped into the middle of a Roman gladiator arena and Salem, Massachusetts where one is burned for being a witch, because for a brief moment, they assume the angel was sent to rescue them from war.
Nope.
The explanation for why so many angels are there is a good one: the battlefield of a war is the perfect place for them to transport people and steal their time.
Since it’s only the second issue in this arc, this isn’t the issue where the Doctor formulates a plan. He doesn’t even have time to think about a plan. This issue is a whole lot of explaining what the Angels are and running. Lots of running. And it’s great.
Thoughts & Questions:
- While each of these series do a great job of capturing the essence of each Doctor, there’s something about this series that feels the most authentic. When I’m reading, I can see David Tennant’s Doctor.
- There’s a nice callback to a former companion from the early TV series, who was the inspiration for a sexy redhead Scotsman in the Outlander series of books (now TV show).
