Gal Gadot is Wonder Woman in the Man of Steel Sequel

The speculation is now over, as Gal Gadot has officially been cast as the Amazonian princess in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel follow-up, coming to screens in 2015.

It feels like every name under the sun was bandied about for this role, and I still think Gina Carano would make a fantastic Wonder Woman. but Gal Gadot, perhaps best-known for her role in the Fast and Furious franchise, isn’t someone who ever really came to mind. That’s not a knock on her and, if anything, it means we all need to start thinking against type; that’s what it seems DC/WB are doing. First, they cast Ben Affleck as their Batman, and now this somewhat of a curve ball. They’re setting themselves up to either deliver a film that surprises everyone or a film that makes everyone question their choices. I think it will be the former, but that doesn’t mean I’m not sweating balls over here.

In a press release, Zack Snyder made the following statement on Wonder Woman and Gadot:

Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.

It may go against the prevailing attitude you’ll find on the internet (at least among those vocal enough to be heard), but I consider Zack Snyder to be a damn fine filmmaker, and I loved Man of Steel, so I’m betting on him with this.

My colleague here at Project Fandom, ProFan Matthew, has another take on the casting:

I’m not sold on the choice, but I’m not against it. It’ll be interesting to see how she pulls off the Amazonian powerhouse. However, what irks me is that in the Superman vs. Batman movie, we have another DC Flagship character being crammed in. What doesn’t help is the rumors of other heroes being added to the ever-so-mysterious roster. At this rate, it’s starting to look like the Justice League movie that’s still off in the horizon.

More on Gal Gadot

The 28-year-old, Israeli-born actress is a former beauty queen who won the title of Miss Israel in 2004 and represented her home country in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant. At the age of 20, Gadot joined the Israeli Army and served two years as a sports trainer to the Israel Defense Forces… while continuing to be a model. In short, she’s a beautiful badass, so let’s go ahead and pencil this in as a great casting choice.
