Bottom of the Queue: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Don’t you hate when you watch a movie that’s so great and so brilliant and you wonder why you’ve never heard of it, why it’s never won any awards, and why nobody else you know agrees on how amazing it is? Underrated movies are sad. Delicious, but sad. The most notable to me is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which came out in 2005. I hadn’t heard of it until my friend recommended it a couple of years ago, so I had zero expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is GREAT. I’ve seen it 4 or 5 times and I find something new to laugh at with every viewing.
Small time thief Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr, who also narrates the film), accidentally ends up auditioning for a movie while he’s fleeing from the police. He is flown out to Hollywood to screen test for the part. Out in LA, Harry is teamed up with private detective Gay Perry (Val Kilmer) to prepare himself for the movie roll. After Harry runs into an old high school crush (Michelle Monaghan), him and Gay Perry find themselves mixed up in a murder. Val Kilmer is hilarious and I consider this one of Downey’s most enjoyable performances. Their chemistry is great, playing off each other brilliantly. The dialogue is clever and snappy and Downey’s narration of the film is extremely witty.
There’s really no other movie to compare this to, but it’s got a little bit of something for everyone. There’s action, humor, a love story, and mystery. I do love me some Robert Downey Jr, so maybe my opinion is biased. And maybe it’s the kind of film made for a specific audience and that’s why it never got as much notice as I think it should have. Who knows. I say just watch it and enjoy it and spread the word about it to others. Give it as a birthday gift. Christmas gift. Or Chanukah. Kwanza. Whatever’s your thing.

I this movie, and I felt like Shane Black really carried over his chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. into Iron Man 3, which really helped to make Iron Man 3 feel like a Shane Black movie and not just another Marvel movie.
My favorite moment in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (of which there are many great ones) is when Val Kilmer asks “If you look in the dictionary under idiot, you know what you’ll see?” To which RDJ replies, “A picture of me?” And Kilmer is like, “No! The definition of the word ‘idiot’, which you fucking are!”
Awesome movie.
I love that part. There are so many great lines in that movie.
One of my favorite lines is, “I don’t think you’d know where to put food at, if you didn’t flap your mouth so much.”
