Kituria’s ProFan Review: Once Upon a Time - Behind the Magic
I’ve never considered purchasing a television or movie companion guide until I received, Once Upon a Time - Behind the Magic-Companion to the Hit TV Show. Published by Titan Books, this 176-page, high gloss book is a welcomed addition to one of my favorite television series.
The companion book contains 9 exclusive cast interviews, behind the scenes information covering seasons 1 and 2 of Once Upon a Time(including short episode recaps), a peak into the minds of the show’s creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, and hundreds of high resolution photos.
The images featured in the book are better than even your best high definition television. The book does not shortchange you on quality, heavier stock pages the ink does not smudge or rub off on your hands, it is heavier than a magazine but lighter than a standard hardback coffee table book (11x8x0.5 inches and a little under 2lbs).
While the cast and character sections are interesting, behind the scenes sections are where this book really shines. Set design, prop creation and development, costuming, computer generated images, you name it, this book has it. Reading the companion book really puts into perspective how the show could not have come together 10 years ago without being cost prohibitive and looking like an episode of Power Rangers.
There is also the obligatory eye-candy courtesy of our favorite baddies.
If I had one qualm about the book is the choice of interviews. Red and Belle are fine characters to feature but unless there are major plans for them in season 3, I am not overly interested in reading about their development.
Once Upon a Time - Behind the Magic was a pleasant surprise that I will use as a resource and proudly display on my coffee table. If you are a fan of the show or if you know someone who is I recommend picking up a copy.
I will be looking into this for sure. I am a new fan, but my husband and I have really enjoyed the series so far. I love anything behind the scenes. 🙂
I’m currently getting caught up on season 2 on Netflix instant. It’s the perfect binge show.
I highly recommend it and it’s under $15. The behind the scenes sections are fun and informative.
